Not in London, but from the CTC newsletter a few weeks ago:

Action Bikes' four stores in London now offer Bromptons for hire. You
can choose from daily, weekend or weekly rates, so it's ideal if you
are visiting London without your bike and want to get around.

I just wish I'd read it before I last visited London :-(

  2. He didn't actually say 'killed' he said 'hit'.

But he has a point. I'm a cyclist (and a pedestrian and a driver) and it
annoys the hell out of me when I see cyclists on the pavement. To try
and defend it is wrong, to condone it is wrong, but to deny that there
is a sizeable minority of spanners who give all cyclists a bad name by
    doing it is wrong, too.

  4. To be fair, though, people on Bromptons (or recumbents) are
To be realistic isn't everyone that works in London a bit of a weirdo in
    one way or another?

It's probably a lot easier to look cool on a scooter in typical Italian
weather, compared to typical British weather, I guess.

Thanks for all the replies! ...some quite funny ones there! I have
narrowed it down to about 3 viable options...

    1) Taxi - Provided I could get it for about £5 (my wife could pick me
    up in the evenings)

    2) Drive car to residential street about 1 mile from station (ie where
parking restrictions end) and then cycle using fold up bike.

    3) Mail shot all the houses resonably near the station with off street
parking and see if any of them would be willing to make about £500 a
year by letting me park on it? ...obviously a lot of people wouldnt,
but there must be someone who could do with the money and might not
need there space (ie might have room for 2 cars)

....I would give more serious consideration to a moped, but the local
roads all have parking restrictions and the station car park has all
the (car) parking spaces drawn out and if you park out side of the
lines you get a ticket! So yes, there may well be somewhere I could
put the moped, but some jobsworth would still give me a parking
    ticket! Ahhhhh!

    Thanks

I'm with you on pavement cycling and its actually many times more
dangerous for the cyclist than riding on the road with the rest of the
traffic. The problem is that occassional cyclists are led to beleive
that cycling on the roads is massively dangerous and are increasingly
encouraged by their council to cycle on pavements by the addition of a
bit of white paint and a blue sign. Is it any wonder that most
occassional cyclists then think that the pavement is where they are
expected to cycle even when the magic white paint is missing?

This makes the most sense to me, but make sure you don't piss off any
residents where you park. If you can find a proper car park, that's
    best.

He's a pretty poor troll with a guilt complex who is simply trying to
make excuses for his driving 5 miles (which is probably exagerated anyway).

  15. There's your problem. They breed if left alone in a shed or garage. I used
to have one bike, then I built a bike shed and now I have ten and a BoB
    trailer.

When I was younger and more foolish I worked in London, commuting from
Didcot. I'd cycle to the station from Steventon. Quiet roads (part was off
road) and never a problem with being sweaty.

Definitely enjoyed the pastry and coffee on the train. I didn't have a
Brompton but left a hack bike at the station.

Go for it.. even for a few weeks using a cheap second hand bike will make
financial sense (presuming you don't have one already.. on u.r.c most people
    would probably have several ;-)

  20. Ah, that would account for our higher than average salaries, house ownership
rates and indeed above average position on every indicator save that of
satellite TV ownership - which will probably change now the Tour is on ITV2
    :)
