Best way to travel 5 miles to a train station?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by David, Aug 11, 2004.

  1. "Last October, the Evening News reported how city children's author Joyce
Dunbar had had her porch destroyed twice in one year by cars mounting the
pavement. Norwich City Council responded to her complaints by fitting [...]
    bollards..."

And that's why there are bollards on the pavement alongside a set of traffic
    lights in Caversham as well.

And the EDP recently ran a story about drivers using the footway to bypass a
traffic jam, putting pedestrians at risk.

There is also the question of what causes all those broken flagstones, and
why councils have to run "pavements are for people" campaigns.

I was almost SMIDSYd last night while running a very good set of lamps
on my cargo bike (it has good quality dynamo lighting built in, so I
can't forget it or have the batteries run down), an ostentatious machine
over 2m long that sticks out like a particularly sore thumb in a sea of
    little toes.
The driver stopped at the give way line as I was headed along the road,
checked carefully and then only moved forward once I'd progressed to
/right in front of her/. Fortunately she realised in time, possibly
aided by her passenger going "!" and a suitable swerve from me. It
wasn't actually completely dark yet, and I was wearing an orange shirt
and a loud green cycling cap.

Difficult to think what I could have done to be more completely bloody
obvious without having flashing blue lights and a siren, but I was still
completely invisible at that precise moment. There are times when
people look but just don't register.

  4. Which obviously didn't cover those lights where you have to lay the
bike down horizontally on the ground, and drag it over the buried
    inductance detector wire.

  5. Er, not quite. What actually happens is that when a car is half on the
pavement, other cars pass inches from it without slowing down. When the car
is parked properly at the side of the road, drivers have to slow down to
pass, which makes it much easier for a cyclist to move out and pass the
    parked car safely.

So what do I do on the induction loops then- get off, put my bike on its
side and wave it over the loop - or can I assume they are broken too if
they don't respond within a reasonable time of my cycling up to them?

  9. "You MUST NOT exceed the maximum speed limits for the road and for your
vehicle (see the table below)." Can't see pedal cycles in the list.

"Law RTRA sects 81,86,89 & sch 6" - ah, that's where we find the fact that
    it only covers motor vehicles.

  10. Welcome to the free market. If nobody was prepared to work antisocial hours
in central London the rate for the job would rapidly escalate to the point
    where they would.

And, of course, this is a diversion: the vast majority of people commuting
    to London are essentially 9-5.

A large chunk of develop cost of a car is aesthetics that has to be paid for
in the showroom. That's hardly "might as well".
    Who is "you lot"?

Nothing to do with the 'free' market; it's simply down to industrial
muscle. Take my word for it.

    Gonzalez () gurgled happily, sounding
much like they were saying :
Why not? Is it because you know damn well that there's a far higher chance
of being caught, because of cameras and number plates?
Even though motorways are the safest roads in the country?

No, because bicycles are explicitly barred from the motorway.

70mph would almost certainly be physically impossible, too.
So why are so many people saying "Oh, well, cars do" (even though they
don't in anything like the proportions) as an excuse for cyclists flaunting
    laws?

Judging from that post you've not been following this thread, so why bother
    saying anything at all?

Judging by some of the aesthetic abortions people happily drive, they

  20. Seems to me that they're still all red lights that you're going through,
    though.

Occasionally you might come across lights (possibly static, possibly as
listed in (3)) with weight triggered sensors which might stick on red
for a while, in which case that's probably legally allowed.

Otherwise, and this comes from someone who cycles more than he drives,
which bit of 'red light' do you not understand?
