Mmm, yes. Stick your hand right in front of a microwave transmitter.

I'm not sure I'm dead keen on doing this myself. But then again, my
current plan is to start wearing a sheet of tinfoil under the front of
    my gilet...

Maybe. I only do approx 10K/yr combined car and m/c. But a good proportion
of that is town driving through rush hour so you'd think I'd have a
reasonable chance of seeing them. Maybe I'm just not paying enough
    attention.

I know - but the thread here has shown that for many (and I did know
this isn't you Andrew - I actually spent some time deciding if it was
fair to respond to you like this) it's not a silly stereotype.

And eventually, if we spend enough, we could have a system that's as
poor value for money as the Americans have.

It's the principal of the thing! Function should come before form in a car
but if you can make something aesthetically pleasing, you might as well.
It's no use talking to you lot, you're just a bunch of Philistines

No, then it is a thing of beauty and, combined with a rider, the most
    efficient form of transport available.

In town it is often the fastest and most effective form of transport as
    well.

Depends :) Obviously if the object's large enough to work, it might
also be large enough to hit the detector/light, with consequences ;-)

It being out of reach could be a problem though, right enough. You
definitely need to be within a couple of feet of them to make hte
    hand-waving work.

(and just to reinforce it, any waving at the detector has to be toward
and away from it, NOT waving side to side at it, as you would if you
were astride a bike and waving both arms up and over your head from your
    sides)

I'll have to look closer but AFAIK the ones I use have detector loops
buried in the ground and not detectors on the lights. ICWBW. If you
phone them up they will sometimes come out and readjust the sensitivity
but there are enough lights where I've sat through several cycles of the
other directions before giving up and I can't spend all my time on the
    phone reporting them

Would motorists consider getting out and walking up to every traffic
light and waving in the hope it would notice them? I don't think so.
So why should other road users have to? If it doesn't detect me making
a normal approach on a cycle, its broken

  16. You must be driving your car at the time then. It's well known that
cyclists are invisible to car drivers.

Unless the cyclists are without lights after dark. Then car drivers see
    loads of 'em.

    Gonzalez () gurgled happily, sounding
much like they were saying :
Very nice. Now answer the question. Would you drive across a red light in
the circumstances you are happy to cycle across one?

Chances are that it's pointing in the wrong direction, or you're cycling
too slowly, or yes, it's broken. I agree, they *should* detect cyclists
as well as cars, I was just pointing out there is something to try and
trigger then rather than going through on red!!!

And FWIW, I've had to jump out the car and wave to trigger a set, so
yes, motorists do that sometimes too. Though you can never be sure if
they were going to change at that moment anyway. And some of them are
set up wrong too, and only on a timer, and one that's far too long. But
that's down to the guys who installed them. If they're not working
right, talk to the LA about them. If someone from the LA visits and
they've not been set up right, knuckles can be rapped quite hard to get
it put right - but not if the compaint is never made.

Permanent lights have the induction loops, yes. Temporary traffic
lights don't, they have the units on the top of the lights instead
(though sometimes lower down these days).
