So the proposed NHCA 'Forgotten Era' class will be (subject to
    ratification at the AGM tomorrow:

    1. Pre 84 four strokes
    2. Pre 80 air cooled two strokes
    3. No Monoshock machines
    4. No wheels smaller than 18†diameter
    5. No rims wider than 3.5 inches
    6. All parts used must be “periodâ€
    7. Pump petrol/diesel only
    8. Solo motorcycles only
    9. 10% of hill record time handicap for machines of motocross origin

No capacity allowances unfortunately, just a fastest time past the post
points system regardless of swept volume.

    <looks at 350ish Morini and shakes head>

So what would make the basis of a good bike then?
A big twin, road bike based 'street scrambler' to avoid the 10% penalty
    I reckon.

    <fires up Ebay>

It's got to be the latest clit bike on ukrm: a K series BMW.

I'll sell you mine after we've done the elefantentreffen if you're
    interested?

I suspect *you* could probably get up Shelsley quicker on it than I can
on the tart, but I was thinking of something less unwieldy.

Hmm. An RD400 had come to mind, but probably too much of a collectors
    item these days.

    XS650 eh?

What astounded me was the price of air cooled twin shock MX bikes.
Triumph twins are also outside the budget I had in mind.

Someone rode one at Loton Park several times back in the early eighties.
Nice noise, shame about the pace.

My lack of total commitment when cornering has to be made up by power.
As Lozzo hints, something like this would fit the bill very well:

Jim Poole's Commando was king of the hill in its day. I still remember
the first and only time I rode one. I have never experienced anything
with such sheer grunt to this day.

Far too valuable though. I need an abandoned XS650 project. Mechanically
sound but cosmetically and road legally challenged.

I wouldn't go near an XS650. The engines are brilliant but the
handling wouldn't be up to the job.

They're too long and it doesn't matter which model you buy, you'll
    always get a bendy frame.

I presume specials of a type that could have been built during the
period are allowed. Anyone got the dimensions for an XS650. Probably a
bit too tall for my cunning plan.

Hmm. See post re engine dimensions for a Yamorini.
42 BHP? The tuned 375 Morini is probably about that (once I have sorted
    the ignition).

If that's the case then a KLR650 would be an even better bet. Lighter,
better brakes, better handling, more power, more torque, cheaper to buy.
