    Sounds unusual
what sort of cover did u have and did u check the policy for tests?
all I have is hospital cover no extras and I put in the excess.
If I had to pay for some of the shit I have had done I would have to
    take out a second mortgage.

  3. Two more examples...
Family friend falls off ski´s in snowies and breaks leg, private cover.
Brother crashes at Oberon and breaks shoulder. Both flown to Canberra same
weekend. Treated in same hospital. Family friend pays a coupla grand. Brother pays nothing.

Daughter suffers burst appendix. Public hospital, private room, no private
    cover, no cost.

I wouldn't insure with them. I hear their clients have lots of claims.

  5. Who were you insured with?

Are you happy with them and how much do you pay?

Is that all you pay? Me, if I don't have private health cover, I'm
slugged even more for Medicare. Thankfully, though, my employer pays 80%
of the premium, something that's standard with US employers, I've heard.
Add in the 30% rebate and I pay $11 a pay or around $290 a year.

An extra percent if over $50k according to my Excel tax calculator.

Ja> it, once you hit 30 is when things start to show a bit of wear and tear)
Ja> the cost of private health cover rises about 2% I believe. So if you

Especially if you play sport. Knee reconstructions seem to be the big

Ja> The thousands of involuntary dollars you are paying isn't so you can be

Ironically, though, the higher paid you are, generally tbe better
educated you are. And this tends to translate to healhier living, and
thus less of a drain on the health system.

Sm> Ok you **** your knee in a soccer game.

There are some that argue that sports injuries should be covered by the
injuree, rather than the tax/public health system. Particularly those
that are rather violent contact sports.

Then there is the argument that if we don't play sport, then our health
as a nation goes downhill anyway. And that adds more burden to the
    public purse.

When a government decides that it wants to encourage people to do
something, say, take out health insurance, or perhaps retire later, or
whatever, they create what they call "incentives". Now, an incentive
could be a positive thing. But in this case, it's a negative. If you
don't, say retire later, then the "incentive" is a penalty on your
super, or restricted access to a pension, or whatever. For health care,
the "incentive" is a jacked up Medicare Levy.

In other words, there are no incentives, here, per se. Just penalties if
    you don't toe the line...

Hence why i take out private health cover.
I also pay my levies at the club and this includes insurance for any
    injuries incurred.
Heaps of physio for an ankle injury was rebated @80%
The levy for 20 weeks one day a week is $250 per player but money well
    spent if you get injured.
soccer injuries so far in 20 years of playing.
    2 serious ankle sprains.
    3 minor ankle sprains.
    2 knee operations
testicular scans after having ball kicked full pelt in the nuts. (not
    even given $3.50)
    Fractured nose.
Swollen and badly cut lip after collision with another player.
Dislocated elbow (by far the most painful injury)
    Injured back.
    Various soft tissue injuries.

In all these circumstances our club's health cover contributed to the rehab.
    Also my own private cover.

    Motorcycling injuries.
    grazed knee
    bruised ego.

Soccer is a dangerous past time.

But that just makes you a burden on the private health insurance industry, and
then the government forces unfit people like me to buy health insurance to pay
premiums for services I don't need in order to rescue their mates who own the
almost bankrupt health funds which are struggling because fitness fanatics
like yourself are so bloody unwell.

It was in 1992 and we were paying $70 per fortnight (1800pa) for
    family "Top Hospital Cover".
She was sent for a carotid-duplex and an MRI
and one was about $900 and the other was about $1500 (but I can't
    recall which was which.)
The insurance covered neither scan but did cover a hospital bed for
    the day.

I reckon insurance is like religion; it provides great moral comfort
    but no actual support!
