we have a very good family friend who is a doctor and he refers us to
some of the best specialists in the business down here Clem.
He's been in the game for so long I'd actually follow his word i trust
    him that much.
He is magnificent and the people he refers us to are just as good.

  9. The more you earn the more you pay, the more you pay the more your entitled
    to use Medicare.

    2% of $25K pa= $500

    2% of $50K pa = $1000 i think

Yep. I had no health insurance for about 10 years till the surcharge was
introduced. During that time I went to hospital once for elective surgery
which I paid for myself. Total out of pocket expense after medicare and tax
rebates, $1300. Cost of health insurance I would have based on what I was
paying for hospital cover prior to stopping (not even bothering to adjust for
10 years worth of premium increases - and don't they know how to increase
premiums!), $5000... plus I'd have had to pay $250 or $500 excess... plus
whatever other gaps.. and that was just hospital cover with no extras. I'd
say at a conservative estimate I'm easily $7000 - $8000 better off for not
    having had for health insurance.

  11. So who is the best insurer?

None of you have looked at the posting.

let me put it this way,

If a truck had run you off the road and you are really fucked who would you
    want to be insured with?

    Medicare
    Medicare Private
    Nib
    HCF
    IOOF
    IBA
    Other

Which is fine for people who are affiliated with sporting clubs or have other
contacts as you do, but for your average Joe Bloggs who wouldn't know a
cardiologist from a cartographer and who's only recommendations will come from
the local GP, is it really an advantage worth paying hundreds or thousands of
    dollars per annum for?

    Nope he bulk bills.
as for the specialists well we pay the gap unless its a hospital visit.
My last knee surgery cost me 300 all up including medical costs etc.
I would not have had the 7000 needed in the private system and i reckon
i would have had to wait months to get it operated on otherwise.
I suppose its up to you if u want private cover.
personally I'd not go wothout it.

No different to buying a bike Nev.
You gotta do your homework and not be scard to ask the hard questions.
I reckon We've left some of our doctors aquivering mess after we grilled
em about every nitty gritty thing.
I remember being unhappy about a stomach specialist once when he charged
    me 200 for a 5 minute consultation
I never paid it and he claimed the medicar levy himself.
I told him I wasnt paying a cent since he told me nothing and wanted me
to come back for follow up visits.
**** him and the expensive mercedes he drove in on.

  18. Yup, happens all the time. Unfortunate, but true. Since I started working
here, bed numbers have gone from 1500 to under 600, and the population has
nearly tripled in Brisbane alone. We also get all the referrals from
regional centres (all of Qld, northern NSW, NT and PNG). Technology has
advanced too, so that the cost of surgery to the hospital has risen because
the new stuff costs more than the old stuff.

  19. Yes, we looked, but we got slightly off-topic, as we tend to do here. Get
    used to it.
If a truck ran you off the road it wouldn't really matter - Medicare would
cover the treatment. the Ambos would take you to the nearest public
hospital, you will get whoever is on-call for your particular injuries, and
you probably won't be in a position to contribute much to how you'd prefer
things got done. Once you're out of intensive [read expensive] care, then
start to think about public vs private.

If you want private health cover (which really does work best for the less
dire things in life), the best bet is shop around - get info brochures from
all the players, check out their websites, compare cover for cost. What are
their extras like? How much gap do you have to pay? Do you have wife/kids
to cover that may need dental, optical etc? Which private hospitals in your
area have agreements with which funds? And yes, it's like bike insurance,
they do have 'preferred repairers'. Can you claim your 30% rebate only when
you do your tax, or can you pay less in premiums? Is there an excess, and
if so, how much, how often do you have to pay it? What are their limits on
    any one hospital visit?

Most of the funds seem pretty much even, just the small details that vary.
But asking which fund is best is like asking how long a piece of string is.
Work out what you need, for your particular circumstances, find out who
gives the best deal on it. Picking a fund for 'whoever is best in an MVA'
and via anecdotal tales in a newsgroup is not the best way to do it...

Only if you go over the $50,000pa mark. (single people - dunno what the mark
    is for couples)

It's not been easy to keep the income under that for the last few years...
