I have a Tomtom rider for the bike, but need a decent one for the car with blutooth that works & speed cameras.? Any recs? -- Nige, BMW K1200S Honda Transalp XL600V Range Rover Vogue
Garmin 2820. Not 100% about the blue teeth though (it does have bluetooth) as I tend to use the ones built into the radio instead.
Tomtoms are the best. Used to do a lot of car journeys in my old job with people with all manner of sat navs, and all other makes are much poorer.
They all do what they say on the box so just go and see which you actually like the look and 'feel' of. Obviously having a Tomtom on the bike means you're used to the menu screens so that should be a point in their favour. Don't come back in a year crying about whichever one you choose, nobody will give a flying **** and if you can't operate the satnav properly or think it should be capable of more than the manufacturers claim then that's an operator error, not a manufacturing one. Don't cry if customer support is out-sourced and you have trouble making them do more than read things off a screen rather than solve your problem. If they were reasonably intelligent people they'd be in a proper job, not answering the phone in the middle of the night for a pittance. £400 will see you getting a good satnav and if you make it last 2 years it'll have cost you £4 per week and that's a bargain when you consider the amount of time you might have wasted if you'd got lost once a week trying to find a customers premises. Treat it as a disposable item and don't bitch if it packs up after a couple of years or a newer model does more for less outlay.
Wouldn't rely on the maps too much though. I bought my Tomtom new in July and updated the maps shortly after. I was recently driving in tenerife and the Tomtom tried to put me in the sea twice. I would guess the maps were at least 5 years out of date.
Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, Andy Bonwick Fucking hell. Bonwick the VoR. I don't like this new Universe, can we have the old one back?
I'm still using my original Tomtom rider in a car mount. I recently upgraded the maps and subscribed to the speed camera updates. ICBA most of the time with bluetooth. I haven't charged the headset up for a year and now it won't anyway. Might be worth getting a jawbone or similar now I have the camera POIs I suppose, to make sure I spot them. I would have to have one anyway as SWMBO says she couldn't stand Jane prattling if the satnav had a speaker. -- +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Pete Fisher at Home: | | Voxan Roadster Yamaha WR250Z/Supermoto "Old Gimmer's Hillclimber" | | Gilera GFR * 2 Moto Morini 2C/375 Morini 350 "Forgotten Error" | +-------------------------------------------------------------------+
I can see the point in someone asking which satnav is easier to use on a bike or which one has the most up to date maps but once you've answered those questions they're all the fucking same. I throw my satnav all over the place in the van, it falls on the floor, I kick it out from under the pedals, I treat it like absolute shit and when it breaks I'll go and buy another one with full European mapping for under £100. It's not fucking difficult to understand the concept so why waste time searching for reviews or price checks? More expensive ones will have more toys but they won't actually *do* any more without me paying for additional subscriptions. No.
I bought a Navigon earlier this year - and also got Navigon for my iPhone. Perhaps not quite as slick as TomTom, but map updates are more frequent and they do an 'up to date' service at a very reasonable cost. They're usually very cheap for the spec, too.
I have a Garmin Nuvi 660FM here in the box. Europe maps. www.sciuridae.co.uk/garmin_nuvi_660fm.htm slightly used by me in the tankbag on a couple of trips. Currently £140 on Amazon. £75?
