I've been waiting for Bennetts to send me a cover note on my newly ordered
bike, they promised to send one out to me and out to the dealership for
    registering etc.

This was last Thursday and it's still not arrived with either me or the
dealership. Dealers have said they can use a fax for the purpose of
registering, so I've asked for Bennetts to fax over a copy, but apparently
this takes them up to 24 hours to :S

Is it legally possible for me to just tell 'em to shove it and cancel the
policy, given I've still not had any paperwork, and wander into the local
brokers and sort something out with them?

Yes, if it is a totally new policy. The distance selling regs, as mentioned
in another thread, give you a number of days, 14 IIRC for insurance, to
    cancel the contract.

If this is a mid-term adjustment then I think you are stuffed.

However, here is a ruse to get you out of a fix:

Go to Ebike, take out a new policy. They do a monthly PAYG one. Print off
the cover note on your own printer. When the policy arrives, within 48
hours with Ebike normally, cancel this new policy under the distance
selling rules. Ebike will refund any premium charged and your vehicle can
be registered using the Ebike cover note during that 48 hours whilst you
    are waiting for the documents.

I don't think this ruse is illegal. Highly unethical, mind. In an ideal
world you will be able to ditch Bennetts and take out the Ebike policy
    instead.

    In

Ta for that, I had to cancel my existing policy with Bennetts to go to a new
company (norwich union) because my then existing company wanted 150 quid
    more than NU.

I've already told Bennetts that next time my policy is up for renewal
they'll not be getting the business.

When I was checking around Hastings Direct were the cheapest quote, but I
figured I'd stay with Bennetts to speed the paper work up as they already
    had my details etc.

I've heard bad stories about Bennetts so tend to avoid them. Similarly
about Devitt. I might get a quote from both just to test the market. They
would need to be significantly cheaper to tempt me. As my annual premium
for comprehensive insurance plus Euro breakdown is only £123 from Carole
Nash, I can't see it ever happening.

    In
The whole country, business wise that is, seems to be focused on the "brand
new customers only" mindset nowadays rather than good customer service to
    existing clients.
