My girlfriend has just had a bit of a computer crises (too complicated
    to explain).

She needs a machine to run her business (she works for herself, from
home), so I'm appealing to ukrm's generous side - does anyone have a
machine surplus to requirements that I could borrow for a few weeks
until she can get something sorted more permanently.

The box can be pretty basic spec - just enough to run email and web,
really, and I've got a spare monitor, keyboard and mouse, so it's only
    the system itself we need.

    Thanks in advance

Champ was seen penning the following ode to ... whatever:
I've got a slimline Compaq P2/600 sitting here holding up a shelf that
you can borrow for a few weeks. Should be good enough for the above if
you've got an OS, as I don't think she'd appreciate one of the Unices
    I run here.

Unfortunately you'd have to collect it...

I do, but it's an older Powermac 7500. Upgraded processor and memory,
though. Plus it has 'Appleworks' installed, which will read and write
    Works and Word files.

Lovely machine, actually, but probably useless for what she needs.

If you'd have asked a fortnight ago, I'd have has a P266[1] spare.
However, it is now in my next door neighbour's lad's bedrooom.

[1] I think. Anyway, it was shit hot ~3 years ago.

If you go for this I have a P200 processor doing nothing and a few paired
sticks of memory 8, 16 and 32s IIRC. May help it along a bit.

Hang on to it - it'll be a collectors piece in a few years. There'll
be a whole new group raving about their SOCs and how marvelously slow
    they are.

Are you fairly close to Champ? [1] I'm sure we could sort out the OS
    for him if need be.

    [1] In location that is.

Anything? Literally anything, or do you have a minimum requirement.
I've got a SOC sitting here atm that is available as a freebie, but I
think the postage costs might be a bit much.

Fucking hell I need a new PC...

Reading this thread, I'm conscious of the fact that my main home PC is a
Celeron 633 o/c'd to 950MHz and yet people are /chucking out/ machines of
    a higher spec.
    :-(

    Still, running Linux helps some.
