    the band of rainbow stripes is called the "arc en ciel".

    they come from cycling. it is tradition in bicycle racing that the
    world champion gets to wear the "rainbow jersey" - it's like the yellow
    jersey in the Tour de France, but the world champ gets to wear it all year.

    in subsequent years after this world title, you'll see that bayliss will
    continue to sport a discrete set of rainbow stripes somewhere on his
    leathers...again a tradition in cycling - only past world title holders
    can sport those rainbow stripes on their riding kit.

    they're a badge of honor.
