    A bit of GP memorabilia...

One of the custom painted Shoei helmets worn by Álvaro Bautista during the
USGP races in Laguna Seca and Indianapolis. Proceeds from the auction will
go to the Japanese Red Cross Society to aid in the relief efforts.

This is the actual helmet worn and raced in by Team Rizla Suzuki rider,
Álvaro Bautista, and features some road rash after low-siding his Suzuki
GSV-R while battling for a top six finish. The helmet is personally signed
by Álvaro Bautista and Troy Lee.

I appreciate the sentiment but it's not a very good way to raise money
for charity. There could be a large number of people willing to hand
over money to a good cause but they'll only take the money from the
person willing to hand over the most, which means they might only be
collecting a measly 1-2% of the total amount of money which people are
prepared to give to charity. If you want to help the Japanese Red
Cross. Forget about the helmet. Make a donation direct.

    I agree with Nev.

But then again, given what I think about racing hoons and those who
would feel the overwhelming need to bid on one of these "must have"
    helmets, that's hardly surprising.

I guess that makes me a toxic troll... [sigh]

Precisely the point I made at work when they were auctioning off
artworks to raise money for a women's charity, Nev.There were plenty of
people who would've happily given $5, $10 or $20 but they missed out on
    that revenue with the auction.
Raffle-tickets would've made much more sense.

Mind you, Linux Australia ran their annual auction at the penguin
dinner a few years ago in Hobart (or was it Wellington? They're all
blending into 1). The product being auctioned was a poster made from
an admittedly nice photograph taken by one of the lead hacker's[1]
wives, of a waterfall in NZ the year before. Bidding is usually
pretty frenzied, with hackers competitively bidding against each other
to see who can afford to donate the most (there are a lot of rich
people at these events, and some of them like to display it), and
entering into consortia (I don't know how you divide a photo into 20
pieces). The profits always goes to a local charity (in this case,
into the research of the Tassie Devil facial tumour).

Anyway, the final bid was for about $45,000. Prior to that, there
were only 2 people in the department charged with protecting the
Tassie Devil. We paid for about 1/2 of a new FTE for a year. That's
about $70 per attendee at the dinner. Try getting that out of a
    raffle.

[1] Another year, we auctioned off his beard. I can't recall how many
tens of thousands of dollars that raised.

My point exactly. According to your maths there would have been
45000/70=642 people in attendance. If they'd donated just $100 each
they would have raised 40% more than the $45000 and paid for almost 1
full FTE at the research centre. If the "rich people who like
displaying it" were challenged to out donate each other, they could have
    raised much, much more.
