Teach a man to fish and he and his pikey mates will have the
river cleaned out in a day.

Get yourself a copy of IL2-Sturmovik. Plenty of planes from that era to
    fly (or shoot, or crash...)

Do they do a Linux version ?

I'd love to find some decent games like that that work on Ubuntu.

Worth checking... in the video options they ask if you want DirectX or
OpenGL... but don't hold your breath...

Otherwise make a dual boot system. The game is really worth it(*). It
has received several additions, the latest being "Pacific Fighters" and
includes American, British and Japanese planes (the original one, IL2,
only gets German and Russian planes, although some of the Russian ones
are really American, like the P39).

(*) IMHO the average flightsim is plain boring. It may be OK for people
who dream to fly planes someday but it lacks action. IL2 has several
levels or "accuracy", which applies to both the physics of flight and
the weapons of your opponents, so in "easy" mode you can quickly learn
to shoot tanks and have fun...

Now off to try torpedoes against the German navy if the Luftwaffe misses
    me...

I still find new things in IL2. Like the time I was flying low near a
ground target and thought I saw a mound appear briefly on a hillside.
Then I saw another. Still didn't make sense until I saw a closer one
that started with a flash: it was AAA shells that had missed me....

Well, seeing as the IL2 was a ground attack aircraft....

Yes is the answer. Airfields, trains, convoys of trucks and/or tanks
are the usual targets. Oh, and the convoys sometimes have BMW outfits
    in amongst the trucks.

The AAA is an absolute bastard, though. Flying fast helps; flying in
low straight at a defended target is pretty suicidal. As is target
    fixation when strafing ground targets!

Be warned, on my admittedly cooking PC it takes several minutes to
load a full mission, though one can set up simple one-off missions.
During the load time the PC barely scans the mouse or keyboard, so
once selected there's no going back.

Used to love playing Air Attack, very basic and easy to learn but hard to
    master.
