Maybe there's something in that, people seem to demand comfort and not
be able to think on their feet as much in these modern times?
True, although I do try not to use it.

How about a spot of scooter 'drag' racing then?

Kewl. I'll get DP on the towing strap, you can get one of the other
scooterboys. Obviously this will be a test of skill rather than brute
    horsepower...

Rather more fun for you than him, I hazard.

I was towed 40 miles home on a wet and windy October Sunday (post bike
rally) evening, which is about the worst possible combination of
circumstances I can think of - multiply that by (still) being more
than slightly hung over and astride a CB750 which was equipped with
stainless discs and friction-free everlasting pads.
I was towed by my mate on a tuned GSX1100, who was also hung over,
jnackered and deaf, not to mention being a bit fucking dim.

Letting go of the rope turned out to be completely ineffective, as the
gnarly oily knotted bit of Satanic string latterly used by generations
of lorry drivers to secure megaton transformers to POS trucks (which
is all that we could find at the time) wedged itself in my forks and
proved immovable without cutting the fucker.

I should have known really, because a few years previous, this
    happened:

It was well borked last night. We sat in three solid immobile lanes
for two-and-a-half fucking hours, doing the seven miles between J12
and J13 - to find that the chemical-carrying truck that had been on
fire was right next to the off slip for J13 ... so they'd closed it
and we had to go up to J14 so we could turn around and return home
    *NOT* using the M1.

I'm now pleased that I kept my distance as I seem to have managed not
    to give anybody my germs.

The modern plastic bodied scooters just don't make the sparks the old
metal ones do. They do seem to slide much better though.

heh indeed. What you need is an old lorry tyre, a length of rope, a
motorbike and a field. Sit passenger in tyre, tow him across the
field. Works best if alcohol is applied to the passenger first.

Probably. You remember the bit in Mad Max 2, where Max has got the
gyrocopter pilot strapped into the passenger seat of the Interceptor,
with the shotgun rigged up and trained on him, and the bit of string
running from the trigger to Max's dog? And the dog sees a rabbit?

Well, my mate Tim on the SL125 said he felt like the gyrocopter pilot,
and was terrified of me seeing another bike.
Lordy, I'd forgottten about that. I now have internal injuries from
trying to stiffle laughter in an open plan office.

I tried that, but astride a plastic inflatable shark and the tow vehicle
was a VW based beach buggy.

Or do it Stonehenge Festival firewood style. Line the bikes up at the
tent end of the (bloody great big) field, race 2-up to the far end
where the woods are, chop down the biggest branch you can reach, tie it
to the bike, then tow it back to the camp with your passenger sitting
    it. Happy days :)

Towed a Suzi GT750[1] from Morecombe Bay to Leicester once, on an
XT500. I was fine but the kettle-pilot (my mate John) was completely
fucked by the time we got him home.

[1] Had an 810cc bore-out, so the normal holed middle piston trick
    struck again.

I still reckon we should have had a tug of war between Nigels
blingmobile and Dodgers wing. Stump-pullers the two of them.

Nigel reckoned his'd blitz it ... but we'll never know without
    empirical testing ;-)

The Wing'd waltz it. Carries its weight low down, dunnit? Not to
mention generating all its torque at the bottom of the range.
If you think I'm gonna subject a brand new clutch to that kind of
treatment, you can think again, sunshine.
