After nine years the bike's battery has finally died.

    It is a VARTA 505 012 aka YB5L-B, 12N5-3B; I can find plenty online
for ~£15, plus ~£7 for the electrolyte, plus ~£7 fo carriage.

Is there any supplier of these, hopefully at lower cost, in the
vicinity of Enfield (Middx), that could be collected (and hopefully
    cheaper)?

My Varta battery died this winter after 7 years. They're crap, aren't they?

Halfords stock Bosch and Yuasa, and your local bike shop will have
    something cheaper.

If you're anywhere near Bush Hill Park, try Bush Batteries:

Station Garage, Queen Anne's Place, Bush Hill Park, Enfield, Middlesex
    EN1 2PX
    Tel: 020 8360 3099

They may not have the Varta, but if you tell them the bike and year,
they might have something to fit.

The current battery came from a supplier at Station Parade, but I
can't seem to find them on the interweb. Bush Batteries web site
doesn't mention Varta, or Yuasa; but definitely worth a call.

    Many thanks.

My father worked for a Varta distributor. They have an extensive UK
    network.

    http://www.mdsbattery.co.uk/contactus/default.asp are in Enfield and
    listed at http://www.varta-automotive.com/eng/index2.php?p=5&content=siteclick.php?anzeige=5
where you will find several others in North London.
