Battery management sustems ?

  1. Nah
I know where you're coming from Gerry.

When our house burnt down at the end of '09, the fire was caused by a
faulty cordless kettle, the sort you just leave turned on at the power
point all the time. Thankfully the bedroom where we were asleep at
the time was at the other end of the house. We should be in the new
    place around July.

Were you at the festival this year?; lots of wet and mud.

Hmmm... I wonder if there are any sparkies here who could would care
    to comment on this issue.
Yep, I was there. Looked for you guys, but didn't see you.

How are you mending from your injuries?

And I gotta ask you: How did you come to tangle with the Armco in the
first place? (You don't have to answer, you know... You CAN plead the
    fifth. :)

It's a sealed battery. I think it may be beyond hope. I'll let it
run for the weekend, but if after that it's not a goer, I'll be
    getting a new batter.

Sounds like a dead cell. Take it to the recyclers.

You'd be amazed how many 'sealed batteries' would just love you to prise off
the filler cover plate and top up the cells.

Anyone who doesn't have an RCD fitted by now is terminally silly. Never mind
    smoke alarms.

But it says "do not remove cover". Surely I must obey such imperial
    direc tives?
I was having a Niu Zilland moment...

I may be terminally silly, theo. It's something i've suspected for a
while now. WTF is an RCD?

  11. Ahh, it's one of those jiggers that cut off the electrical supply to a
circuit in the event of a short to earth (think a finger). The tech term
    is "residual current detector".

If it's not working, what's the worst you can do? Break it?

The cover generally comes off quite readily and goes back as easy. In my
experience, once you prise off the cover, you will find a row of plastic
screw caps just like on a 'maintained' battery. Some have push in caps
attached directly to the cover, no problem.

A Residual Current Device, known to normal people as an electrical safety
switch. Required by law here in new houses for 15 years, in rented houses by
next year or the next tenant change, and in all existing houses when next
sold. They will trip with a leakage of 30ma which means you have to empty
the crumbs out of your toaster regularly in future as a build up of burnt
toast crumbs will set it off.

Oh I see. well our house, being nine years old, has them fitted. So
you're telling me I can't get electrical fires when appliances go
    spastic?
