Ah, maybe, but can you differentiate between believing and knowing?
You can recite it at the pub. :)

Aside from the Scientific Method, I leave analysis of these deep ideas
to the experts (Jenny is one of those btw - philosophy major for her
    BA)
Err Lawson Pub..?, no thanks (or any other pub for that matter :))

LOL, would anyone ever want to be in a situation with you kneeling on
the floor, looking up and passing comment on how big they are ?

Post mortem: I have bought the Powertech MB-3604. and it came with a
handy plug-in device to fit to the bike.

Thanks to all who offered advice. It helped me make up my mind.

You are all lovely chaps and chapettes. :)

Great. To maximise charge, leave on for at least 12 hours even when
the "FULL" light comes on after an hour (the voltage will gradually
increase as the battery continues to get a good long soaking).
But being lead-acid, doesn't matter if you cut the cycle short and
    resume later.

    Nah
Do what these things are designed to do, leave on forever and let the
chip decide the state of the battery and corrective action.
You want a manual charger, use a manual charger. Otherwise use a
battery minder like we have been discussing.

oh I agree..just dont be misled by the "FULL" light. It's not even
    trickle charging yet.

I love a good debate... Keep going guys, I might learn something.
    ;-)

My problem is that our garage is under our bedroom, with only a crappy
wooden floor in between. A fire starting in the garage while we're
asleep would probably mean we'd wake up dead. Hence I hate leaving
anything electrical on in the garage overnight. Especially these
days when everything is made to the cheapest possible "standard".

I have enough trouble sleeping as it is...

Thanks alx. I'm currently (pun intended) charging a semi-dead battery
to see if it can be revived. It does't hold a charge much over 11
volts (useless), so we'll see what happens. And as you said, the
"full" light comes on almost immediately. I assumed this was
misleading and just left the charger on yesterday, and resumed it this
    morning.

    Hmm
If you leave a Lead Acid battery unattended, the fairies suck the
charge out of them. Too much too long of this treatment kills the
battery. You discover this when trying to start just prior to the most
important destination and time of the year.
That's what God made battery minders for - to ensure stress levels due
to dead batteries are kept to a manageable level.
He did not account for your natural paranoia bur did in fact give you
fuses to help in this regard.

    I have spoken.

Should recover anything down to about 7 volts. Below that and a "dumb"
battery charger would be required. Any long term storage below 12.60
volts is going to see sulphation.

Whilst the smart chargers can detect a few faults, they usually won't
be able to load test the battery. ie showing a healthy 12.7 volts but
fails miserably when using the starter motor.

WIll see what a good long charge will do but may be too much
    sulphation or other damage.

How are the fluid levels in it?
