Is the Optimate III the best you can get? Does is do what is says on the
    box?

Is the Oxford equivalent as good?

Where's the cheapest place to get one?

No. The one I designed is better than all of them.

    Oh yes.

Any garage with a bike parked in it Sunday evening to the following
    Sunday dinner time.

Optimate have had consistently good reviews for years. I don't think you
can get better, but some of the competition may be as good.
Accumate, and the Ofxord one are probably much the same, although I
    haven't tried them myself.
    Under the Christmas tree.

Be sure to get a wall-mounting bracket at the same time.

A piece of piss to build. one transformer, one capacitor, one resistor
one chip, a diode pack, some wire and an optional box to put it in.

    Maplins prolly do a kit.

An even simpler raise from the dead but don't overdo it charger is a
meaty 10V transformer, a full wave diode pack, wires.

Accumate is a slightly different box of gubbins.

It does 6v which the Optimate doesn't and doesn't do the full on battery
    recovery which the Optimate does.

However, mine has rescued a couple of what appeared to be beyond help 6v
    and 12v batteries.
