battery charge light

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by The Happy Drunk, Sep 30, 2004.

  1. Hello,

I've just noticed my battery charge light is on while riding. It's not
on bright, more of a dim glow. When the motor is at idle the light
extinguishes, but as the revs climb so does the brightness of the
light. This was at night with the headlight on low and no other real
draw on the battery except the motor itself.
I'm thinking that perhaps the alternator might be on it's way out but
haven't had a chance to have a good look at the bike or the manual.
Does any one else have any ideas of what could be causing this and
    what checks I could do?
    The bike is a K100RT 1987.

two alco talking about doing some work in the shed hey...

firstly id put a multi meter on the battery while the bike is on, see if
your getting a charge at all, should be around 14v or so, give it some revs,
see if it stays constant, that be the regulator gawn if it moves..

usually a dim glow means something is drawing too much power, like a
    short...

thems a car type alterynator...prolly its brushes are shot and it needs
a new regulator pack to keep it happy
get the part number and visit your local Ashdown branch

you got a car type alternator.
    Needs to be rebuilt/replaced
    OR change the alternator belt
    (yes it does have one)
Even the boxer engines have em

Is the alternator running hot and making a funny noise? If so one or
more of the diodes in the alternator could be faulty. This happened on
my Mini when I reverse connected the plug and blew some of the diodes.
The alternator whined and got hot and the warning light glowed dimly.
You might be able to replace just the diode pack depending on how the
alternator is constructed, and how friendly your local auto electrician
    is.

know why, globe is OK, don't care any more. Make mine a Hahn.

You had battery charge? Looxury! We couldn't afford to
charge our batteries when I was a boy. We had flat
batteries, and we were glad of 'em...

"So far Howard's luck has survived a great deal: his move to dismiss
broken election pledges by distinguishing between "core" and "non-core"
promises; his retrospectively time-limited "never ever" pledge on the
goods and services tax; his vagueness about when he committed Australia
to war against Iraq; his shifting standards for ministerial conduct; his
demonising of asylum seekers as child killers; his tendency to blame
"advice" rather than to openly accept responsibility when things go wrong."
Will Howard's luck survive another election ? Do Australians not care
that their PM is a liar ?
