heh, at the time of the strike I was in the bay window wiping down the
window and sill with a towel because I'd left the windows open when it
started raining. Holding my arm up with a wet towel :)
I live in a flat so the buildings are covered in my yearly maintenance
money. I might ask at the AGM what value they're insured for.
Yeah, did make sure that the cover was adequate. Easy to forget to
    add stuff though.
This is a really small claim, only 500 quid for a tv, computer and
router so there haven't been any problems and More Than have done it
    over the phone.

My insurance does cover it. It says so explicitly in the policy. And
they said so again on the phone.
Telewest own the box. Telewest can replace the box for free or I take
    my business elsewhere.

you'd think the cable box would have some kind of isolation innit. Just out
of interest, what is the cat5 connection between the cable box and your
    network?

Satellite cable comes out of the wall and into a Motorola Surfboard
cable modem. Then cat5 runs from that to me Netgear WRG614 router and
thence on to everything else. Only one computer got toasted, and I'm
    not sure why.

You expect the masses to do without TV for a couple of hours? What a

The context of your later comments was that you regretted telling the
truth, and would lie if in the same situation again. Is that not the
case? And, if it isn't, why are you advising other people to do
something that you wouldn't do yourself?

To be fair, I read that as him railing against a world where an honest man
is so blatantly disadvantaged, rather than him advocating dishonesty in
    future.

I was riding home in the downpour in jeans and leather jacket, most
interesting it was. That ignition problem I thought was fixed is still
there although to be fair it was like riding in a bath.

Oh and I managed to get an electrical contact in my 1000 mile old back
tyre as well to round out a thoroughly shite bike journey.

So, what do you believe people *should* do in such a situation.
While I appreciate that BT have a lot more money than you, *somebody*
has to pay for the machine, don't they.

I think it's a little disingenious to offer no view on how other
    people should behave.
I think you'll find that's bears no relation to what I said.

I said that *somebody* has to pay for a piece of broken kit. It
wasn't your fault it broke, but equally, it wasn't BT's either. This
should therefore properly be something that's covered by insurance,
    imo.

Are you sure "act of god" exclusions are still included in modern day
    insurances?

I have a feeling they are not, but really CBA to look at my house policy.

Does it also apply to bike insurance I wonder. For instance, if Champ or
Bonwick crashed one of my bikes, would my insco say it was "act of (riding)
    god"? ;)

  19. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember "Helium"
An insurance company that hadn't a clue, obviously.

  20. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
Problem is with most of these surge protectors is that the MOV in most
of them is degraded by small spikes over time and it just isn't capable
of handling a large spike when it arrives.

They're cheap and nasty ways of selling peace of mind that doesn't work.

A decent lightning-induced surge will laugh at puny attempts to protect
equipment; the only real way is unplug (power and comms).
