Apparently the V stands for V-Tec. Being of short leg and general womanly type build my wife is thinking about buying one of these. I have to say that it is the smallest 400/4 I have ever seen... Anyway, I know its an import, but the one we are looking at has 7500km on the clock and its a mint '96 bike.. Anything I need to know. I have been told spares are readily available (but I am sceptical about that). Anything to watch for and what sort of price should we be looking at. Its a dealer bike with 1 month warranty err... but 12 months MOT and anglicised (ie with a "proper" MPH dial on the speedo (although the odo keeps km;s). I think they have to have single type approval.. Any suggestions or do we walk well away. i personally would walk well away , sounds very strange that the Speedo is in mph and the odo in kph if its been anglicised all measurements should be in mph
In not if they've just popped a MPH face on a KM/H clock. That's what I used to do with my Integrales... -- Pete M Alfa 164 TS, Mercedes 500 SEL, Jaguar XJ-S 3.6 Scouse Git extraordinaire. Liverpool, Great Britain
The mph onto a kph clock is a common fix. Doesn't seem at all dodgy on a model that was first sold on the Japanese market and later imported to the UK.
wouldn't that fail the mot test if the odo registered in kph not mph I don't believe so. I don't think the speedo has to work for the MOT and wouldn't be surprised if you didn't actually need an Odometer
Yes, but they'll write 'kms' if the readout is in kilometers. The MOTs for my old FZR were like that. The only legal requirement is to have mph in the speedo readout, whether it's by means of a new face (like the OPs Bandit) or by a sticker on the clock it doesn't matter.
Legal or MOT requirement? I don't think the speedo is a testable item neither is there a requirement for an odometer (KM or Miles). There is, however, a requirement for a speedo on vehicles greater than 97cc. Whether this has to be dual scales, or be able to select one or other, I'm not sure. But I'm sure it's age related if it is, as my old Morris Minor (1960) [1] only had MPH and my Guzzi (1979), MZ (1973,1979,1980 etc) also only show MPH. [1] Proved handy, allowing me to talk [2] my way out of a East German speed radar trap near Chemnitz (Karl Marx Stadt at the time) [3]. "I was doing 60, yes I realise that's 100 for you but look the speedo is sooo old. And they're English, bless" [2] Well, Peggy did the talking, I just had a sinking feeling when I picked up the words "drei hundred marks".
In fact thinking about it, it can't be. How about my GSXR? The digital speed readout is only in mph. Dunno if it can be switched though but there is nothing in the manual to suggest it can.
Can't see how... my odo doesn't even work, it's stuck at just under 75k miles, but it passed the MOT last year with the minimum of fuss and no reference to the odo.
Martyn was seen penning the following ode to ... whatever: AFAIR you're right to be sceptical unless you speak fluent Japanese...
