Just got back in the saddle after about a year out with a bandit 600 S, a 96
P reg, courtesy of the big Owen. I was made redundant last week so am
looking to work in the city and hence the need for a bike again. Anyway
along came the 600S which looks the ticket, only problem is there are a few
bits to fix on her and was wondering if the collective knowledge knew a bit
about bandits or was able to help out.

    1) Any ideas if the 1996 P Reg 600S has one of those model numbers like K1,
    K2 etc?

    2) Petrol tank appears to be leaking around the seem and has taken the paint
off and doesn't look so good.. Anyone got a spare one or know where I can
get a s/h or new one cheap? Colour not important (blue is the original)

    3) The joint in the exhaust has corroded away. I'm thinking about trying to
weld in a piece of stainless pipe, but before I spend a day cursing and
swearing has anyone got any spares/hints/tips or cheap sources?

Any other bits and bobs going spare/cheap I'd be very grateful

I got my joint welded up with a new bit of stainless steel. It's done a
few years now, and is still as good as new.
I may have a swing arm going for free, when I put my alloy one on.

I think I'll have a go at that tomorrow if I can get some stainless wire. I
wonder if the local exhaust fabricators ahve off cuts of stainless pipe I
could knick.. I wonder if these is a local exhaust fabricator saying that!

    equipment, yet.

Arse, man. Best of luck with the search.
No, you numpty. 2001 model was the K1 and then it follows in
    sequence.
Petseal may be yer man here. You know - pour it in, swish it round,
    let it set.
Those fuckers always go, Matt. Banditmania <spit> do a mail-order
weld-by-return service but it isn't cheap. If you can weld stainless
and have the kit to do it that would be your route, or get the lot off
the bike and go talk to a local engineering/welding shop.
I've got a few bits that might do (if I can find them) - what are you
    after?

But they did have model numbers: 1996 Bandit would be a GSF 600S T

    My '98 one was W

Not sure it makes much difference, though.

I've welded a couple of these for family/friends, if you are going to
weld it make sure and use Argon gas otherwise the welds are shit, also
try and get the same grade of SS, IIRC its 304, I used an old
intermediate pipe for a race can chopped up with an angle grinder. If
not its about 80 ukp/section + postage from banditmania.

And have fun making sparks ;->

Have used argo flow before rather than pure argon and it seems to be ok...
we'll see! It may turn into the bean can and jubilee clip to get it through
    the MOT test!

eeeek £80! plus of course I'd have to get it to them to do the job and I
dont think I could turn it around inside a week.. Oh well, going to go and
have a look in a mo... Why on earth did they put a section of mild stell in
    down there?

The welding should only take an hour or so, after you have managed to
get the headers off, get new bolts for them as the standard ones will be
slightly corroded and are a PITA.
    Dunno.

Before I tried welding them myself I send off a set of headers using
parcel force IIRC it was 16ukp from Glasgow to banditmania and the pipes
were returned within the week. Nonetheless they did a good job and
return the pipes with the gaskets and other gubbins.

never heard of it before but just run a google and found it - is there
anywhere you can buy this stuff on the high street, don't fancy trusting
mail order as I want to get this done ASAP!

no reason why I can't give it a go, my welding is ok, will go and get the
stainless kit for the mig in a bit.

I'm sure I'll find some bits whilst taking this one apart. Probably after a
speedo if I can find one.

cheers for that, just when ordering stuff they seem to want to know which
model it was for some reason although it looks like everything pre 2001 were
the same from the sites I've seen so far.

I've got a can I decided not to use - yours for what it cost (15.99) +
postage if you get stuck. Or if you're within spitting distance of
Swindon you can come & get it.

The 'original model' bikes are all the same in the parts department,
AFAIK. There was a big change for the 'K' model bikes and a few
details since, but you're all right as far as that goes.

Told you it wasn't cheap. That's plus postage, too.

As to the mild steel - **** only knows, unless it's there to act as a
semi-flexible connector. Those that have been repaired with stainless
sometimes suffer with cracking at that point. The cynical/realist
(delete as appropriate) answer would be 'designed-in obsolescence', I
guess - but that's cruel as that section doesn't rust out for ~10
years, by which time the bike is generally worth little more than the
    cost of replacing the exhaust.

    It's an arse.

Most proper bike or car parts places should carry it - let your
    fingers do the walking.

May the Farce be with you, my son.
Sorry. No clocks in stock. I've got a screen for a faired Bandit ...
but that won't be much use, will it?

I may have a kmh speedo available when I put some different clocks on my
Bandit. Right now, all I've got is a rev counter outer case at the mo.
