When I bought the bike I asked how many gears it had, the (then) owner said
five, the internet said 6, other people said 5.
Just been out for my first real hoon-et on the bike. It has six.

What's going on, do all B6's have 6 or only the very early ones?

I feel like a member of Spinal Tap, "The numbers all go to eleven.
    Look...right across the board."

In other news - Yes, I did have fun, even on new tires.

  2. Did the (then) owner actually ride it?
    Dunno. Mine had six.

Thought it all sounds a bit strange.
Mine has six gears too. If you look on the side of the casing near the
gear lever, you'll notice that there is 65432N1 written there, the 6
being at the top and 1 being at the bottom.

My GS550 has a little LED thingy that says what gear it's in.

    1... 2... 3... 4... 8... 8...

The GS550L loaner I had had one of those, only it read:

    8... 8... 8... 8... 8... 8...

That was nothing, though, compared to the rock-solid shocks, and leaky
forks. Or the complete lack of go.

I was glad to give it back.

Well I've heard of uprating gearboxes but that's just ridiculous.

Apparently, it is possible to put a 6 speed box in a B12 if I read
    correctly.

  10. Indeed- I think an old Gixxer 750 box is normally used, however it
involved uprating clutch baskets etc, so it's not cheap.
