Well guys I finally got a bike, unfortunatly wasnt quick enough for a zzr

suzuki bandit 250 in the paper and ended up getting it.
its a 2000 model (not a import) with 19,000 on the clock got the guy down to
    3grand
    so think i did ok?

  6. Nice. You got a variable valve model as well. If you want more power, try
knocking out the exhaust baffles and then adjust the needles. I did it on my 96
bandit and it sounds like shit but goes a lot better. (burns shitloads more
fuel as well. Get about 160km on a tank instead of 220km)

did you time it on a dragstrip or dyno it or is this a 'seat of the pants'
    opinion?

Cheers for your input guys, its good to know I did alright, this being my
    very first roadbike purchase!

Digger, this bike is also for me to ride on my L plates, my missus is going
to book a appointment for me to do my L plate training tomorrow, hopefully
it isnt all booked out for ages! I also learnt to ride on a trail bike,
guess it should help me having a bit of a head start on maybe other people
that have never ridden a motorbike at all, although I have heard you pretty
much cannot fail your L plate rider training anyway as its so basic, and the
instructors do want to help you pass

Thanks for the info on the baffles Anish, might consider doing it when I
dont live 3 doors up from a policeman tho! ....my mate in his gsxr (lives
across the road) is constantly being pulled up about his exhaust by the
local cop, even though supposadly its legal, the buggers keep trying to
knock him on it....This may come down to him leaving for work at around 4am
tho, and he hasnt got a very light touch on the go-stick and proberly wakes
up some light sleepers. (also guessing the local policeman is one of those
    light sleepers)

Only 1 thing missing from my bandit, a damn manual, and it seems they are
also not available freely online like I thought they would be :(

Oh just remembered a question I been meaning to ask, the gearsak bag thing
that came with the bike is a bit old, and has a couple nice holes in it. I
want to replace it and was wondering if they made a bag thats lockable and
waterproof that would fit my helmet and jacket inside...and maybe a rough
guide as to the cost Im looking at.

    Thanks guys

Oh just remembered a question I been meaning to ask, the gearsak bag
could replace it with....a gearsak bag !!
    marvellous thing the gearsak...$125 ?
lockable???...unless you have a knife !! can be secured to the bike with a
small chain, can be 'locked' with a small padlock through the zipper tags
otherwise you would need a hard topbox...givi maybe
    dunno...always had gearsak bags

Lockable and waterproof means not cloth. Cloth can be
waterproof more or less, but is never knifeproof. You can try
curious-but-not-committed-thief-proofing it by locking the zipper pulls
together, but if you do that the zip will break from the weight and
flapping, it's why Gearsack don't have zippers you can do that with
    anymore.

Your best option is some kind of hard topbox, what kind and the price
will depend on the current rack.

For dirt cheap, make your own - get a plastic box and bolt it to the
rack and add hinges and padlock. Pick a box with a wellfitting lid that
    will be waterproof.

For more expensive and less naff, then go to a bikeshop and ask. I expect
in the $100-$200 range if they can find one that will fit the rack, as the
loop the Gearsack fits on will probably get in the way. If you have the
skills you can cut off the loop and fit some kind of plug in the tubing.

    ...snip
Givi do a nice lockable top box that goes onto the gearsack "sport" rack. The
sport rack is the same as a normal gearsack rack but with a low bar instead of
the tall one. Circa $300 from memory.

lockable top boxes start around the $100 mark and go up from that for bigger
    sizes

In Sydney? I called the Thursday before last, and got into HART
(St Ives) for the following Wednesday/Thursday pre-learner class.

I didn't ask, but I got the impression that I may have had to wait
quite a bit longer if I wanted a Saturday/Sunday one.

Let us know how you get on. I am planning to do mine early in the new year.
My chook chaser (XT250) is registered so im not in all that a hurry to find
something new but i would prefer to keep it as a farm only bike with a cheap
250 (or LAM) road bike for work etc. After lurking in this group for the
last year or so i think everybody has me convinced that a VTR is the way to
go. Plus insurance is cheaper on a 250.
Ive only been riding dirt bikes for about a year so im hardly the most
experienced rider going around, but hopefully what i have learnt about
riding in the dirt will help me keep it upright on the road.

I'd say you've done quite outrageously well for $3k, unless that pic
is of the "good" side! ;-)

The thing about painting wheels black is that you don't
even have to take the tyres off to do it!
