Heh, I'd forgotten all about that lens. That was the one lens I dreamt
of when I first started. I thought that if you had one of those then you
    were a successful photographer.

OK, here's what I managed. I'm moderately happy for my first try...

Lighting was very simple and completely static. The room was very small,
and whilst I started off with my 16-85mm zoom, I found that I was shooting
around 60mm for the closer shots, so switched to my 60mm prime.

ISO was pushed to 3200 for some stuff, and then down to 800 for others. I
couldn't get a post-show shot with them together as one of them had to
rush off. Probably on a promise.

A prime has only one focal length - for example 50mm - whereas a zoom
    has a range of focal lengths - for example 70mm - 200mm.

Because a prime has a specific focal length it doesn't require as much
glass as a zoom, which should mean a better quality final image. The
entire lens design is also specific to that focal length, which again
should improve the final image quality, whereas a zoom has to work over
a large focal range and so the design must be compromised to work over
    its entire length.

If you have the option, then it's always best to go with a prime if you
want the absolute best quality you can.

No zoom - generally much better optics for the same or less/fewer amount
    of glass.

Dunno, except maybe you could confuse that with meaning a zoom lens set
    at 60mm.

Thanks. I've only spoken to my mate and he's pretty chuffed with them.
The others have explained what it is. Why I used the word was to clarify
specifically that I didn't just keep my zoom set at 60mm. I agree it's a
superfluous suffix, just one that I'm used to using.

The reason for switching rather than just keeping my zoom on was to have
1-2 stops more light and possibly better optics although I've not done
back to back testing. I'm pleasantly suprised with the optics in the
    zoom.

Although on the flip side, the zoom has VR (or IS for Canon folk), which
allowed me to stop down and get some motion blur.

Cheers, and thanks for the tips too. I need to have words with the
guitarist about how chequed shirts are not rock-n-roll.

No, warning the logo of another band when you are performing is idiotic.

Thanks. Obviously the rainbow was just being in the right place at the
right time. The fireworks are pure luck. I think I took 600 shots over 2
nights, messing with exposure times, aperature etc. My friend who was
with me had some shots that were pretty much exactly the same, so I didn't
bother uploading those... plus they get a bit samey.

Post-processing to the rescue! Although they weren't bad originally, the
    B&W helped.
