Motorcyclists fined ,000 after pursuit on Pacific Highway 7, November 2003 A group of 12 motorcyclists has been fined in excess of ,000 following a 15km police pursuit on the Pacific Highway near Newcastle today. Police from Tuggerah Lakes first observed the riders about 11am travelling north in formation on the F3 Freeway at an estimated speed of 140kph. A Lake Macquarie police car with lights and sirens activated attempted to stop the motorcyclists near the Toronto exit. The riders ignored police warnings to stop and increased speed to 150kph, weaving in and out of traffic as they travelled north through Hexham. The motorcyclists eventually pulled to the side of the Pacific Highway near Heatherbrae, about 4km north of Hexham Bridge. Every member of the group was issued with a 59 traffic infringement notice for exceeding the speed limit by 45kph or over. The offence carries an automatic license suspension of six months. Several of the riders were also issued with infringement notices for defects and other traffic offences. Lake Macquarie Local Area Commander Michael Kenny praised the efforts of the police involved in the incident, which passed through three local area police commands. "This is exactly the sort of offence for which this legislation was given to us, when a gang of motorcyclists tries to out run police," Supt Kenny said. "This has been a very good result."
