Backfiring through carb

I have a 2002 Kawasaki Vulcan Classic 800 with 2000 kms on it. It
intermittently backfires through the carb, primarily when punching the
throttle up when I down shift. It has also done this when I crack the
throttle at a stoplight just before I let out the clutch to pull away. In a
few cases it has completely stalled out when it backfires

I reported this to my selling dealer when I had it in for its first 1000 km
service, and they told me that the carb may need re-jetting.
Any pro's out there with a little advice? I am beginning to lose faith in
the service department. Since I wouldn't expect this from a brand new bike
    "out of the box".
I have owned this bike since new.
    Thanks in advance,
    Craig

Most new bikes run very lean to make the manufacturer look good in the EPA
ratings. New jets will make it a much happier bike.

Your dealer is right. Modern bikes are jetted ridiculously lean.
Richening up the jetting will make a world of difference. It has on
the last 3 bikes I've owned.

    Craig .....

If that 800 is like the 1500, it has a EGR cannister/pump thingy, and it
can be disabled, which just_may_help the prob.

Find the input (vacuum sides) and block 'em off with small marbels, or
ball bearings. You'll havta find out what's what down there, but it
    ain't brain surgery. Or
ask a wrench at the dealer.
