So, I replaced my textile jacket today with an nice waterproof HG one,
but decided not to get the optional drop-in back protector as I
figured it's better to get a proper full-back one.

I don't want anything too ungainly - are things like the knox stowaway
    any good?

Are there any alternatives worth looking at?

Over to you, o mighty font.

I was out today doing 100mph in last years Chimay one and my back
survived the ordeal without any problems. Highly recommended.

I have a black one with DFC on the back.
Seems to work really well so far.

I regularily do 100mph in my FOTL UKRM FOYRNB ones.

It does ruffle up a bit with the wind, and I guess that'll make it
    protect my neck even more.

Well of course. The pictures of riders in leathers will add extra ink.
