I know there's a lot of people here (Bear eg) who manage their back
pain well. I have sciatica at the moment and can't get a doctor's
appointment this week (though doc is going to phone me). I am on the
max dose of paracetamol plus diclofenac but could do with advice on
best over the counter meds - anyone?

A codeine and paracetamol combo is (apparently) the most efficient non scrip
    treatment.

What Beav said works well, but in my case it also knocks me out for a
few hours ... which isn't a bad thing sometimes. ;)

swmbo bought a cheap 'Tens' machine from Lloyds pharmacy (£10 I believe)
and that works well for minor values of agony, and is very good value IMHO.

Apparently acupuncture is good for back pain. I had it for my arm pain,
but it made me feel knackered too.

Doctor has now phoned and will leave a prescription for uber-strength
codeine/paracetamol combo at the desk for me. Hopefully, that will be
fine. Thanks for all advice everyone.

Yes, I've used Paramol in the past:
    http://www.mypharmacy.co.uk/medicines/medicines/p/paramol/paramol_tablets.htm
OK - looks like you're sorted.

I really must contact the guy that Adie put me onto for some more Chiro.

If the script is for 10/500, you can save a few quid by getting some
Paramol from a chemist instead, depending on how many tabs the script
is for. 32 Paramol cost around 4.80, & contain 8/500
    dihydrocodeine/paracetamol.

Get some laxative with that too, as it tends to stop you up.

It's how I got rid of my sciatica after 4 years. It's 99% gone anyway.

I used a "proper Chinese" one, rather than an English person who has done 2
months training and read a few books.

Everyone else I know who have used the latter reckon it hasn't helped.

Ah yes I should have added that. In fact my Chinese Doc does not speak a
word of English, she works through an interpreter.

"Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh that hurts" does seem to register however.

They do the "Cupping" thing on each pressure point after the needle is
    removed too.

Cocodamol worked well for me, as did/does hot baths. Being careful how
you get in and out of bed also helps.

Also, if it's likely to be an ongoing thing, there's a a back pain expo
thing at Olympia weekend after next.

After my interaction with the car, several years ago I found the way I
slept had most influence on aches the following day. The firmer the
bed, the less I ached next day.

Urgh - pain is really bad today, even after 2 Solpadeines. Will go and
get the uber painkillers in a minute. Called in sick. As Owen has said
up there ^ somewhere, we are off to Malta next week and I'm going to
rest up - there is no way I am jeopardising this holiday.

    mmm, chocolate.
Last time I had sciatica this bad, I also had the pain of a slipped
disk. And we were on holiday in Ireland. On a bike. The nice Irish
doctor prescribed Voltarol, dihydrocodeine, and Co-proxamol. I said
"Do I have to avoid alcohol?" He said, "No, the occasional Guiness
won't hurt." So I drank like a fish the whole time. The pain did not
go away but I didn't give a **** most of the time.

I drink one cup of strong coffee per day. Why, does that make a
    difference?
