I've ridden a Drifter with a hand gearchange, it made me giggle lots
and was probably the most memorable bike that I rode last year.

As a rule I hate cruisers, but that thing was immense fun to ride. You
don't change with your left hand, you clutch in with the left and
    change with your right.

Well yes. I used to try clutchless 'hand across the tank' changes to the
right hand gear lever when I was vintage racing the 1929 Raleigh, thus
minimising the interruption in WFO throttle. Often unsuccessfully, so I
rigged up a crude heel and toe foot change for the 3 speed Sturmey
Archer gearbox with an external not very positive stop arrangement.

  3. It couldn't have been a proper Drifter. The one wot I rode din't need you
to change gear. all you had to do was leave it in top and be careful
letting out the clutch when pulling away.

    Magnicent bodgineering, I'd say.

In that case - is it also function as a self-righting mechanism, in
    case of inadvertent inversions?

  6. Wotcha.
Not a problem - mine has a sticker on the tank that says
    "This way up"

It's the other sticker on the bottom of the tank that worries me.
    "T'other way up"

Might be. Depends on whether other tentative plans come to fruition and
whether I can find a day's leave somewhere.

  9. No. Again. Because work changed the crucial trip[ dates and once again,
    I will be in Chile.

Looks likely that I will be. I'd better buy a new tent, I left the old
one in a skip in Civitavecchia so I'd be forced to use hotels on the
    return trip.
