Really? Every day's a school day.
Do the tens of thousands of people with metal in them carry
"offical-looking laminated cards"? I very much doubt it, since such a
thing could be knocked up by anyone with a PC. If it's a 'real'
problem, then there will be a 'real' solution - given that I've never
heard of such a thing, I doubt that it is a problem.

Note that I've taken 6 flights already since I has the metal inserted.
Of course, the fact that I was on crutches was a bit of a clue for
    those.

Anyway, I quite fancy confusing the airport jobsworths. I hate the
whole dehumanising shit one has to go thru to fly nowadays, so I'll
    enjoy them earning their money.

I'm pretty sure I flew a few times with my intramedullary nail, and it
never set the machines off. I was chatting to the security guys about it
the first time, and they tried the hand-held scanner too: not a blip.

Not sure about this, i have had stuff in a hip since 1996 and for a couple
of years afterwards it set airport stuf off but not since around 2000 have
    i set anything else off.

Mind you with that lot it might just go crazy, then try explaining to a
    jobsworth
    what the situation is.

But well done for getting out on the bike.

    This is what I thought.
Explain what? It's not my fault if their machine plays up :)

  10. Wheras I have, inexplicably set them off. I'm a reasonably savvy flyer
and ditch all the loose metal stuff (My pierced jewellery doesn't
trigger the big detectors) long before walking through the detector. The
last time I flew to Chicago, I set the thing off. Apparently the
detector indicated that I was carrying metal somewhere around my knees.

I got a pat down, then a wanding, that showed nothing below the thighs,
but did catch *all* my jewellery, much to the concern of the Customs guy.

The metal work in my shoulder wont set of the hand held scanners, but
it's only a nail and a few bits of wire. Champ has half of the Forth
    Bridge in his leg.

With the plate in my leg it never set off the detectors in UK airports
but set off every detector in foreign airports.

Which would make it even more fun, trying to explain to someone who
speaks pidgin Engrish why you've set it off. Luckily it was just
holidays so the airport staff spoke good English.

All metals are detectable, although some less than others. It's the
conductivity, rather than magneticity[1], that makes the difference,
as it's a "disturbance" to the electromagnetic field, inducing a
current, that is used in these machines.

Or something like that. SWK will be along shortly.

The depth within the body will mask the effect to a significant
    effect, though.

Indeed. The first time I flew with the titanium rods in my back a
scanner beeped, and I was hand-scanned to confirm my story. But I
think that was actually just a freak, and quite possibly activated by
metal in my shoes or change in my pocket, as I never set them off the
other ten or more times I went through them.

But as you say, it's no big deal if it does - at worst you may have to
bare the flesh in a cubicle to show the scars and for them to confirm
the source of the metal, and they'll be quite used to the idea.

[1] What's the right word for this?
