Once I've got them up to temperature (say 30 miles upright or 20 miles B
roads) then I'd happily demonstrate on brand new tyres.

If that's the case I'd suggest you need a bit more practice, either that
or you haven't a clue; maybe even both.

    A simple question:

Do race teams use tyre-"warmers" or tyre-"scrubbers"?

In an ideal world both I think. A couple of laps to scrub the tyres and
warmers while they wait for the tyre's race to start.

Nope, not even that. I have no qualms about slapping a bike on its
ear straight out of the pits with brand new rubber fitted (so long as
    it's good and hot).

  11. Ones without green fuzz would be nice but I've never seen a rough one
    without.

    There's a (c) too:
well, a (c(i)): Don't think about it, just ride it -
and (c(ii)): If you think about it too hard it might stop working when
you disprove the theory ... and you don't want that.
"Thinning a bit on top, aren't we Sir" - that sort of thing, you mean?

  13. <FX burst into tears> Cost me £200[1] on Monday, after the MOT man he
say your back tyres completely bolloxed and the front is not much
better. I rang round a bit and that was the cheapest, including coming
to work and fitting them there.

How much more would you cry if I said you can buy a pair without
    fitting for £129?

    SP says...
That's a very useful site for people who want to know how different
tyres compare in stickiness terms. They're cheap too.

  17. Fitted it was the cheapest my phoning around found and that's come to
work and do it here so no faffing about for me at all. The local bike
shops wanted more than £75 extra and I would have had to take the bike
to them. Getting the tyres loose from the interweb and then taking
both wheels off, driving 20 miles at least to a tyre fitters waiting
an hour etc, how much is the cost of that?

Not everyone has the availability of free fitting at work or through
friends, most people have to take what they can get. I could've got
the tyres delivered, took the wheels off myself and taken them to the
local bike shop who would've charged to do each wheel and then charge a
disposal fee for the old tyres. For the extra tenner it was worth
standing around TST for 1/2 an hour so they could get *their* hands
dirty, and I got a nice ride-out too boot.
