AVG 8.0 free version - possible problem alert.

I recently upgraded to V8.0 and got a problem in Firefox.

URLs typed into the address bar refused to open in a new tab, as
specified in my options. Everything else was ok, so I went to try
disabling add ons, as they are a common cause of bugs.

That is when I noticed the AVG safesearch extension (it checks for
malicious stuff in the links returned in a Google search). It's part
of the whole package in AVG 8.0 free. I disabled the extension and the
    problem appears to be cured.

Just a heads up for Firefox users, if you use AVG 8.0 (free).

It also slows searching to a crawl (whatever the browser) as the sites
on the search results all have to be 'checked out' for malware. A custom
install allows one not to install these components.

Personally, I think I'll look else where from now on.

I ditched AVG when v7 came out. It seemed to take ages to boot up and
    started giving some false positives.

The free version of Avast seems to be running fine on my laptop & desktop

  5. Avira AntiVir is good, too. I have that running and AVG doing a weekly
    sweep.

Can't be that good if you need 2 of them.

  7. I wouldn't trust just the one - both of them claim to get most, but if
one gets something the other missed, I consider it worthwhile. Apart
from that, they're free, so what do you expect.

AntiVir has freaked out on accessing more than one iffy site, so it
seems to work in realtime well enough; AVG has remained silent under the
same conditions, so I'm less inclined to trust it and relegated it to a
    weekly role.

That's the reason I'm going to ditch AVG. I don't want the thing
    interfering with my browsing.

Think I'll try ClamWin, at least it just sticks to virui. Or I'll just
not bother. I've never had a virus. Bit difficult to recommend that to
friends that are computer biffs though.

  9. Go for a decent anti-virus - I use Kaspersky here and it scans the
incoming http stream without any apparent slowdown.

And given the fact that one of the big malware growth areas at the
moment is in infecting 3rd-party websites in order to spread nasties
I'd be a bit wary of *not* having something that scans..

I'm not going to pay for a yearly subscription model.
My browser doesn't run javascript nor any other active content, unless I
explicitly enable it for a given site.

  12. Does it process graphics files?

Does your browser handle iframes? (Silly question - all modern ones
do). So you may never know if an infected site opens an iframe to
somewhere else that tries all the exploits going to try and infect your
    PC..

Sure - the majority of web malware infections require javascript or
some other active content but it certainly isn't all.

    NoScript isn't a guarenteed way of negating infection - it's a good
weapon to use but it won't prevent non-js attacks.

Saw that when I caught the tail end of a segment of the Gadget Show when
channel hopping. The connect and check every 5 minutes would annoy me on
dialup though. I'll wait and see how they get on though.
