    It isn't.
Yebbut that's not as catchy. Besides, the nicest weather in recent
years has been later in the year. September is the new July.
Is there a # for a '**** off from Champ'? I'm sure there should be.

Yes it fucking is. And the longest day. And my Birthday (and AndyR's
    too).

Just because there _used_ to be a pagan "holiday" of that name on the
24th in days of yore (i.e. before the gregorian calendar was adopted)
doesn't mean the currently accepted use, to mean the longest day of
the year, is not correct. It's the old use that's now 'wrong', if
    anything.

"In reality there are no hard and fast criteria to determine the start
of each season; the onset of Spring, for instance, could be the date
on which the first daffodil is seen or the first birds make their
nests or some such criterion. The dates of nearly all of these are not
only extremely difficult to determine but also vary quite dramatically
through the United Kingdom, let alone the rest of the World. "

Exactly. So if you want to allocate a specific date to a season, or any
part of it, the only baseline that makes sense is the astronomical one,
    which uses the equinoxes.

    Also from that page:

"Thus Spring is deemed to start at the Vernal Equinox (near March 21),
Summer at the Summer Solstice (near June 21), Autumn at the Autumn
Equinox (near September 21) and Winter at the Winter Solstice (near
    December 21)"
Me! Getting back to the original point, one thing I think we can agree
on is that June 21st is not the 'middle of summer'. It's either the
start of summer, or three weeks into summer using the "three calendar
    months" approach. Therefore tonight can't be a MOSM - it's either a
    BOSM or an EOTFT(ish)OSM.

Err. Yes. It does. Eventually. It's an evolving language thingy,
    innit.

Why the **** would you want to do that? You're contradicting your own
sources here. It says, quite clearly, that the use of the term 'start
of summer' is an entirely arbitrary thing for convenience sake only,
used in astronomical circles. It's use in a more general sense is
contra-indicated by the tesxt I quoted.

No it doesn't. In the real world, if we talk about having four
    seasons, then they're something like:
    1) Cold, dead 2) Getting warmer, lots of new life appearing, 3) Long
days, normally warm, 4) Nights drawing in, crops harvested, leaves
    dropping, getting colder.

So what makes sense, if we actually want to allocate a specific date,
is to pick one which accurately reflects what actually happens. ****
the astronomers and their so-called "official". If they want to call
summer spring then let them get on with it, but don't try and say that
they're "right" when they're patently not, nor expect the rest of the
world to agree with their arbitrary definition.

Can't recall, OTTOMH, but if so it's just coincidence. The date was
set as one of the 'quarter days' when rent would be paid.
