And it shows that the road is, indeed, a lighter colour.

Ha. "Unions called for employers to keep staff cool and called for a
change in the law to create a maximum working temperature. "

They should try working in my office. It's a balmy 31degC at the
moment, which is fairly typical for the afternoons atm, except on
those days when it's got _really_ hot.

It's 33.6 here in my 'office', & I've been decorating all day. Not my
idea of fun I can tell you.

  9. Blaney might confirm this from personal eyeballing - somebody mentioned
this morning that roads in Dubai don't melt in daytime temps of 30+ and
I assume the Dubai gov't didn't skimp on the quality, rolling in money
as they are. There must be tarmac mixtures / compounds that are capable
of resisting fierce daytime heat and nightime coldness.

Why do you think they've had expansion joints in rails since their
inception and in the 'modern' era (since the 50s) pre-stressed CWR?

    ....because of sunbeams, Sunbeam

Err... so that means a sunny day shouldn't cause any problems, yes?

Unfortunately very sunny days do and always have done. Buckled rails
used to be a major problem but the comedy carnage is actually quite rare
    now.

I was late as the hole was deeper and wider than I'd expected. Isn't
    that always the case?
Note to self about helmets and unfaired bikes:

    1. Around town, open face helmets are more convenient than full face
    helmets.

    2. On country lanes at the legal limit, open face helmets are not as
convenient as full face helmets as the insects are distracting and sting
a bit as they bounce off your face

    3. On open roads at twice the legal limit, open face helmets are far
from ideal as big insects hurt like ****.

As an aside, I've discovered the Zed is just as scary at those speeds in
the dark with an open face and shades as the Harley is; your braking
distance makes little difference if you can't see where you're going...

A scarf of some form is a requirement at higher speeds. I have a nice
cotton Arab headdress thingy I use in the summer. Cool and deflects the
    insects.

In colder weather a natty long, tight knit wool one works. In deepest
darkest heavy rain and hail winter I have a neoprene arrangement.

When I did the Frankfurt run I found the salt from the roads (normally a
tasty addition to the day) conspired to get on the inside of my leather
goggle pads and that rubbed my face a bit sore.

I recall looking a bit like an angry Panda with comedy drawn on
    spectacles.

I stopped at my dad's to pick up the Bonwick, don't forget, and it's
never possible just to stop and go at my dad's.

I took it easy on one or two spots; mainly were there was clearly no
    stone, just tar.

The prosecution would like to call the 'Ping Lozzo' thread as its next
    witness.

    champ: "I'm notoriously unobservant".

    I rest my case.

One of the lanes on my commute was re-laid on Monday using the
    cheap'n'chearful tar'n'gravel method.

As of last night there was virtually no gravel left on it and the car
noticeably slowed down on the tar. I wouldn't dare ride a bike on it.
