We're not specifically trained in negotiation as such. I think the method we use to select the negotiators is the key point. We're elected and re-elected regularly and as this is essentially based on results and results alone it soon sorts those who can deliver those who can't fairly early on.
The training you do get though is very thorough and all half decent TU reps that I've ever across know which way is up. One of my colleagues is a TU rep and she can spot an angle or an opportunity at 100 paces. Staff hearings used to be done in our building and you could spot the "victims" and their TU reps from half a mile away.
I'm led to understand I have a somewhat abrasive approach and "a look that leaves in no doubt his opinion of an individual or issue".
Oh dear - we are one and the same person ;-)
We also have a rather direct and 'industrial' approach.
Yes I quite like doing that. Often gets the other side to shut up or else agree that their line of argument is "not relevant". Oh dear - we are etc etc etc.
Never - negotiations are done sober, deals and face saving arrangements are occasionally done in the bar.
Well your reputation about being more forthright to "anyone in the vicinity" once alcohol has been imbibed seems to be legend on ukrm. I was just musing whether beer was used as a tactical weapon so to speak.
Although a manager's minion once threatened to glass me but that's a different story.
Can't imagine why anyone would wish to do that to you.
