Automated plate recognition

    They have had this in shopping centers for a while but this is the first
    time I have seen it mobile and working in real time.

    Curious what the implications will be.

    I wonder if they can use it to pick up people who don't wear
    seat-belts.....

    Well it looks impressive.

    I for one would back it being used here. Takes away the risk factor of being
    hit by an unregistered vehicle & stolen vehicles can be recovered alot
    quicker.

    been in use in NSW..picked up quite a few unregs and unlicensed/banned
    drivers.

    Seen a small white camera on a tripod about 2 feet high with a Police
    car in the last 3 months in Sydney

    About 300 metres further down they will have another car pulling
    people over.

    They trialled a kerbside version of this in Melbourne to catch
    unregistered/stolen cars a couple of years ago. Never heard much about
    it after that. Probably doesn't "save as many lives" as a speed camera.
