Attn the web monkeys

A mate of mine wot owns a local bar, works at a local bike shop in the
day. Their web monkey fucked off and the site needs updating and
maintaining. He said to his boss "I know a bloke who knows computer
stuff. He'll be able to do it for sure." He unfortunately meant me. I
know nothing of that sort of shite.

The question is; is the site any good? Is it maintainable? Could one of
you lot do it, and I'll translate where necessary? Or is this stuff such
a piece of piss that even I could do it?

Needless to say, I doubt they'll want to pay much. However, I might get
a few beers out of it, and I'm sure that applies to anyone that helps,
if they were to pop out here for a few days.

Looks basic enough to be able to upkeep with MS FrontPage or Dreamweaver

It's crying out for a simple CMS solution - although they might be creating
the HTML automatically on the client-side and uploading it occasionally,
WTF would anyone help a commercial outfit with their commercial website for
    reward? It's insulting.

Ignoring the website for a moment, would they sell me a bike at cost-price +
a few beers, just because I know you?

I'd charge about £1500 to rebuild that site as a bespoke CMS. About the
same amount as they earn from selling a couple of dirt-bikes, I should
    imagine.

A quick look at the source suggests to me it's being generated by some
sort of cms. The formatting of the source gives it away.

  7. Ok. You've made your point. Although I don't know what a CMS is.

The shop is a little outfit that probably doesn't benefit much from
having a website, other than "every business has to have one". I think
someone built the site whilst building up his business as a designer,
and has since made the big time and is no longer interested in the
piddly small scale (ie; not much dosh) jobs.

I think my question is "is it likely that with a bit of reading up, I
would be able to update it?" (I ain't tick, but I've never created a web
site in my life). If not, then I would want a price from someone like
yourself to update it, with presumably a little help from me with the
language (if necessary). For my part of the collaboration, I would be
rewarded with a couple of beers.

I don't need to earn a lot more, because I've just landed a lucrative
pool-cleaning contract that will net me in excess of 100 euros per
    month. *Every* month (except August).

Sorry - didn't mean to rant. It'd be different if *you* wanted a website
(re-)building. Us biker bro's gotta help each udder out, after all.
CMS stands for Content Management System - basically a generic template
system with a flexible database behind it.
The HTML mark-up is generated on demand by a server-side script (like PHP or
Perl). There are data-entry forms to keep the database up-to-date.
There are several open-source CMS solutions out there...
    http://www.mamboserver.com/
    http://drupal.org/

... but there's more complete (and rated) list here...
    http://www.opensourcecms.com/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=388&Itemid=143

If you can't find anything you're happy to use then I'm sure I can help you
    out.
I could get the price right down if you were prepared to do a lot of the
donky work and customer-facing stuff. Plus you'd learn some webmonkeying, if
    that turns you on.
    I'll email you.

  9. I do have oodles of time, so I don't mind doing donkey work. The
customer is a drinking buddy, so no problem there. I also know my way
around a keyboard (was a programmer for quite a few years). But I have
    never done any webby stuff.
About pool cleaning? Praps not. Do you have my email addy?

Heh. There's some limescale in the bath, but our swimming pool has
round-the-clock protection from dirt, grime and virii courtesy of it being a
    figment of our imagination.

Your email addy? Nope - wasn't it then? ;o)

Could you email me - sorby69 at gmail dot com - cheers
