The key is that beer and lager are carb-heavy. Gin & slimline tonic, for
example, is perfectly acceptable as it's got nigh-on zero carbohydrate.
Kahlua and Coke, otoh, is about as bad as you could possibly get.

The other problem with booze is that the body will metabolise it in
preference to body fat, so if you're doing Atkins and drinking you'll
find that booze consumption will "stall" weight loss (not to be
confused with dropping out of Ketosis)

If anyone's unsure about how it all works, rather than the lifestyle
impact, feel free to drop me an email and I'll happily explain it all.

Body cells first work through their internal glycogen stores - the sugars
they keep internally for rapid access. This is continually replenished
    by sugars from the bloodstream.

When you eat something sugary, this is absorbed into the blood. The pancreas
them releases Insulin to cause this to be converted to fat and taken out of
the bloodstream to avoid blood sugar levels spiking too high. If no insulin
is released, or the body has developed a tolerance to insulin, blood sugar
levels spiral upwards out of control and you enter a state of hyperglycaemia
which is potentially fatal. This is what happens to diabetics when their
insulin levels drop too low or they consume too much sugar. (Ketoacidosis)

If no sugar is available, the body will turn to fat and protein reserves.
If you're eating plenty of dietary fat and protein, it will use this first.
If not, you start processing internal reserves (fat and protein in the form
of muscle). The liver breaks down fat and proteins into ketones which the
body (and brain, like any other cellular tissue) will use as fuel. Eventually
this would lead to the breakdown of heart muscle and other handy tissues
which you really don't want to happen.
The Atkins trick is to put you on a fat and protein diet, preventing the
body consuming its own lean body mass (muscle) in preference of dietary
    intake.

The heavier you are, the more fat you have, the more lean body mass (muscle)
you need to keep everything moving. The more LBM you have, the more calories
your body consumes at rest, so far people can get away with eating more.
Figure 10 calories per day per pound of body weight, so a 12 stone adult
will typically burn up 1700 calories per day just ticking over.

As you lose weight, you don't need all of this muscle and so some will be
broken down anyway - this is where the old "when you stop exercising your
muscle turns to fat" tale comes from; excess unused muscle breaks down
and the calories that muscle would have burned are stored as fat.

Ha! A trick question. The only thing that could make _you_ more
attractive to women is a large life insurance policy in conjunction
    with a pine box!

Yup. Thanks for all your help. The battery has had a serious topping

electrons aren't getting to their place of work...

To be fair, one aspect of the Atkins diet proper is the daily popping of
a handful of pills, from chromium picolinate to l-glutamine, the latter
being a supplementary 'brain fuel', so to speak.
