It's a measurement of the impact a food will have on blood sugar levels.
The higher the index, the faster the sugar is absorbed and the more of
a spike you'll see, with the Insulin surge that follows.

Sugar, potatoes, bread (the enzyme Amylase in saliva breaks down starch
chains into simple sugars by the time the food even hits the stomach so
they can be considered equivalent for the purpose of digestion) are all
very high, brown rice, proteins and fats are much lower.

Or you could listen to Cane. ;)

True, but oxygen and whiskey makes a good cocktail.

  4. I have a (female) friend who felt like this and the doctor said she
had a slight gluten intolerance. The resultant diet is not a million
miles away from Atkins' - no bread or pasta, or any other refined
wheat-based products. Carbs in the form of brown rice and potatoes
    were ok though.

It doesn't appear to have been a lasting problem, though, as far as I
know she is back on wheat-based products again now.

Good luck, anyway - food intolerances can be a bugger to uncover.

Ho easily the carbohydrate in a food is abosred into the blood stream,
and thus raises blood sugar (I think)

Same thing, innit. Regular lungfuls of two-stroke have the same
effect as a couple of spoons of castor oil every day - keep you well
    reg'lar.

    Older than that.

My elder sister started he first diet at the tender age of 1957 and she
    gave up bread and spuds[1].

Mind you, 45 years on and she is still a fat mouthy cow so I don't think
that giving up the carbs helped her any.

[1] Remember kiddies, we was only just out of rationing and we didn't
have exotic food like pasta and rice in those far off days.

  15. My missus' parents split up when she just started uni and she took it
badly and got depressed and balooned upto a size 16. She went on the
weight watchers diet and now a year later she's a size 10 and much
    much happier.

The thing about the weight watchers is that you can still eat stuff
you want to but you balance out the fatty stuff with healthy stuff,
its interesting reading the boooklet as food you think is healthy
quite often isnt as good as you think.

She tried the atkins when she was around size 12, but went back to
weight watchers as she didnt drop any further weight.

If you think that you are over eating (ie stomach feels tight after
eating) as opposed to just eating the wrong foods then a handfull of
almonds and a glass of water 30 minutes before you eat dinner will
    actually reduce your appetite.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I weigh about the same as I always did.
    Mine has halved.
I dunno about mine, we have sort of agreed that it is not really so much
of an issue until the BP is back within readable limits.
My perfect diet, oddly, allows me all the carbs I like but no dairy
fats. And of course no sodium.
If I did any exercise then I reckon I could get slimmer but no lighter.
I am not sure I would want to either. Then again I am one of those who
think that aesthetics is better than physics.

I am encouraged by my doctor to drink.

    I haven't got a bike.[1]

[1] I hate that when that happens, I was feeling all happy and superior
    up until then.
