I seem to have 'lost' the sticky bit off one of the front brake pads.

Don't ask me where. I'm sure it was there earlier. And then I rode the
bike round the block a few times to test it before its MOT. And after
a little while there was this funny scraping noise under braking. So I
    tested the brakes a bit...

The disc is a bit scratched on the outside edge. Salvageable?

Also - can't undo one of the retinaing pins in the caliper to get the
    bloody pads out. Any suggestions?

Spray some brake cleaner in your eye.

  3. Probably. Disks tend to get scored in normal use. Unless you've
gouged mm-deep grooves, and even the most ignorant biker[1] would have
noticed before then. Just carry on (after replacing the pads).
    Apart from the ubiquitous angel-grinder?

    [1] Exclusing one, who I won't name because he's in Canada[2].
[2] And none of you know him anyhow...

Why did I know that that was going to be the answer.

Happened to my uncles fazer6, the friction material had come away from
the metal plate as it had corroded at the join.
depends on how bad the scratch is, I suspect it will be fine so long as
it doesn't interfere with the contact area. You could grind/polish the
scratch off or you could let the brake pads do that.
I had to split the rear caliper on my bindit, then, using; a drill
chuck,WD40, heat, scraping things and lots of patience managed to remove
the pin from the caliper body. The inherently stupid design of the
caliper means that this is the only way to replace the pads.

  8. It was too good to pass up! I'd originally typed "angele" and when
I came to proof-read it I stopped myself just in time from deleting the
    "wrong" 'e'.

Ah. It was only the cover grub screw thingy. Got it sorted with that
old trick of tightening it and then it came free.

The nice man from BFM motorcycle spares dropped some pads off on the
way home. What a nice chap. Jolly good friendly service.
