Just done a 300-odd mile round trip for a meeting in the last 24 hours
    on the SOBMW.

Got it home and noticed one of the silencers is making a metallic
rattling sound when you kick it.

Would I be right in thinking that'll be fecked, then?

  2. Yes, but who cares, as long as it's not blowing or making a nasty loud
    noise?

It's loud, but then it always has been.

I didn't notice when I was riding it.

What I did notice is that it wasn't particularly happy holding 90mph
(allegedly) for over an hour - it got a bit fluffy, IYSWIM, almost like
it was running out of fuel.

All sorted itself out when I backed off a little.

Was fine once it had cooled a bit.

Don't even know where to start with that one.

  4. It's possible the fuel tap filters are a bit clogged and aren't letting
it flow enough fuel, so it's running a tad lean. Or, if it has two taps
as my old RS did, you had one closed off, which would have the same
    effect.

My RS needed both taps open when running hard.

That would also have the effect of making it run a shade hot.

Both open, so I'm going with the filters.
This is the longest pretty much non-stop run I've done on it so far -
the protection from the fairing always impresses me.

Although it was bloody scary on the Severn Bridge in a strong cross wind
    - I could barely hold it in my lane.

  6. Heh. One memory of my old RS was when a rear wheel bearing let go right
in the middle of the Dartford Bridge at about 60mph.

Having a bearing collapse feels exactly like a puncture: it went all
    over the place.....

I've got the SOBMW bug now - I really want a twin-shock RS for weekend
    kicks.

Also been eyeing up the twin-spark conversion kits, too.... but I know
I'll bugger up fitting one of those.

Would be a real fluke if it did. More likely with a post 84 model
given the difference in internal design.
Probably what TOG said or it needs a bloody good service and the
issues are the result of the cummulative effects of a number of things
not being up to scratch. Dirty filters, oil passed its best, partially
blocked jets all sorts - however I make no claims to being any good at
    this sort of stuff.

Is the silencer a standard one or a replacement stainless one.? Keihan
have been known to be very generous if its one of their stainless
    jobbies that has broke.

I'll check the tap filters when I get a chance - the inline filters may
    also need swapping.

Oil is fresh, as is the air filter.

Could do with doing the plugs, I guess, as I haven't done them yet.
Not sure - had a look earlier - it appears to be OEM BMW stainless.

  11. Never even seen anything like that, nor even heard of it hapening to
    anyone I know.
And a mouse could have built a nest in the can. It's more probable.

I don't think the OEM were SS. The cost of a full Kehin SS system will open
your eyes to the true cost of Eternal Life

  13. They weren't SS as OE. Keihan systems are not cheap, indeed.

    Stamped:

    Zeuna ZS433 Stainless.

Can't find much mention on google - just a couple in German.

  16. Did I ever mention the time a wasp built its nest in the spark-
    arrestor of my TC185L?

Check the carb diaphragms for splits.

That one cost me a new exhaust port+valve :-(

Running lean = running hot = burning things. Anything that causes it,
including fuel filters, carbs etc. could have expensive consequences.

  19. Came back to take it out for a ride mebbe two weeks after last
using it out on the trails in the forests around Canberra. Noticed idly
that one of the superfluous mounting points that Japanese manufacturers
seem to put on their chassis (presumably for different markets/models) had
its bolt-hole filled with mud -- assumed that was just because I hadn't
washed the bike after my last foray...

Thumbed the starter (the TC185 had a large genemotor as well as a
dual-range gearbox, it being aimed at agricultural markets) and all was
well until I opened the throttle. It died. Rinse and repeat. Hmm, try
again. Idles OK. But nothing coming out the exhaust? Unscrew the
drain-plug at the bottom of the upswept exhaust and give it throttle --
lots of blue smoke comes out of the hole as it revs! So, take out spark
arrestor and find it clogged with a wasp nest made out of local mud...
