I am not justifying it. I am against them all. I was only providing
an example of other groups of people that may want the same rights as
the Gays are going for. I mean why should the gays be any more
important than anybody else? If two consenting adults that have say
cerebral palsy marry and chances are they may have defective children
as well. The fact is you got to consenting adults that happen to be
close relatives and they want to get married. Why is it they cannot
have the same rights as what the gays are going for? You have a
problem with their sexual behaviour? Just for the record I do just in
case you try and twist my words. What would you think if a 45 year old
gay guy was to marry an 18 year gay guy if it were legal?

There are two arguments that have been used for granting special
    privileges to married couples:

    1. Community property requires spouses to impoverish themselves for
the care of their partner, thus insuring the medicaid system against
    catastrophic and chronic illnesses.
    2. Child support obligations protect the State from shouldering all of
    the costs of childcare.

As the set of people who assume these obligations is not necessarily the
same as the set of people who have legal marriages, I would contend that
marriage ought to be removed as a test for qualification to receive
    these privileges.

No. Incest was not merely tolerated in certain situations, but
mandated. The Ptolomaic dynasty of Egypt was inbred for 250 years. The
prohibition against incest has been made largely on eugenic grounds, and
unless we are prepared to stop a whole range of pairings that are
likely to produce offspring that will be a burden to society, I don't
see going down that road. Your example would produce a sterile mating,
and would be irrelevant under almost any eugenic scheme.

There is nothing to stop parents and adult children from living
together, and what goes on behind closed doors is none of my business.
What does concern me is when they pool their assets for mutual
protection and are denied the tax benefits that are routinely granted to
the couple on the wedding cake.
While one can only guess at someone else's motives, let me suggest a
    couple of possibilities:
    1. Civil unions would be created by the states and not recognized by
the Federal Government under the Defense of Marriage Act. A number of
the most important benefits granted to married persons are in the
purview of the Federal Government: estate tax exemption, joint income
tax filing, immigration rights, privileged communication. Until the
Federal Government is prepared to say that it will treat registered
domestic partners as it does spouses, the proposition of "full legal
    benefits of marriage" is chimeric.

    2. Gay "leaders", like most Americans, have taken to heart the language
of the Brown v. Topeka Bd. of Ed decision to the effect that "separate
is inherently unequal." While most Americans would be horrified if the
courts applied this dictum to public rest rooms, it remains an honored
doctrine and one that is likely to shape people's strategic thinking.

And wouldn't it be terrible if everyone wanted the right to vote or to
send their children to public schools? Free for all strikes me as a
    very goood thing.

Fine. Let's prohibit carriers of Sickle Cell, Huntington's Chorea or
Tay-Sachs from marrying. And let's require that their (illegitimate)
offspring be aborted. In a world of genetic testing, there are more
efficient ways of dealing with potential genetic defects than
    controlling access to legal marriage.

  7. There are few areas more civilized than NYC. Perhaps you're confused
and consider "civilized" to be places where people are spaced more far
apart and behave all polite and down homey.

That's what we call comfortable. Civilised means an extraordinary
level of human interference in the surrounding environs.

That is the issue that must be addressed, and the only one IMHO where we
have a chance of winning. If allow an answer to the question "What is
marriage?" to be "What' it's always been", then there are as good
arguments for excluding same-sex couples as for including them.

The French seem to be ahead of the curve on this, having deliberately
defined "Pacts of Civil Solidarity" which are open to any adults who are
not married and which have defined rights and obligations.
Interestingly, more heterosexual couples are choosing PSC's over
marriage. Also interestingly, when PSC's were first proposed as a
solution only for gay couples, the Parliament rejected it soundly. By
taking the sex out of the equation, the proposal got overwhelming support.

I have friends who were both highly paid workers who did the math and
came to the conclusion that they were better off not marrying. Having
two children didn't change that for them.

  12. What would you think if a 45 year old
The may justify anything with a Bible Mike...

In the beginning God created Adam and Eve... their off spring were sons Cane
and Able... OK that's 4 people on the face of the earth... so how did God
sort out the marriage problem then???

Having lived in Paris and other large cities, NYC is one of the more
barbaric large cities on the planet. It is one of the most uncivil places
on earth. I refer you to James Kuhen "The Strawberry Statement: Notes of a
College Revolutionary." for some thoughts on the subject as well.

In VERY few states here in the US can that happen. In most states, they
must be married. Common-law is not that common, and some states (such
as Virginia) do not recognize common-law as married, leaving them as
individuals, in fact, it's illegal to have sex if you aren't married in
the state of Virginia, and if you are married, only missionary style is
    legal.
If they grant the gays all the rights mentioned, and don't call it
marrige, then they must grant heterosexuals those same rights without
    marriage.
The definition of marriage has changed over the ages, what's wrong with
    it changing again?
That's their right to their belief, but not everyone agrees with that.
