A week before the Cross City Tunnel opens, they claim to have come with
a solution for motorcycle tolling, the armband etag.

Taking a toll: e-tag armbands for motorcyclists
    By Malcolm Brown
    June 4, 2005

Motorcyclists will no longer have to search for coins at toll booths.
They will be able to buy armband e-tags, allowing them to ride straight
    through
tollgates on the new cross-city tunnel, to be opened on Sunday June 12.

The e-tag system, announced today by Peter Sansom, boss of CrossCity
    Motorway,
will be valid on all motorways in NSW.

Rosco Lloyd, director of the NSW Chapter of the Harley Owners Club,
    said it
would make life a lot easier.

And rider Meg Doyle said it was not before time. At Sydney Harbour
    Tunnel this
morning, she said her juggling act had almost brought her to grief by
    banging
her into the car in front.

Rider Ray Mychalewycz had tried using a car e-tag on his bike. It was
    legal but
inconvenient and yesterday morning it had not worked.

Yeah I got that with the note that says "we knew you were gonna look this up
so we archived it. You can still look at it if you give us money". Pricks!

  8. Seriously, one of the issues with armband tags the MCC kep mentioning was
the possibility of injury for riders meeting the ground. I wonder how big
it is. personally if I have to have one I'd rather have it bike mounted,
    but easily removable.

Shold be able to sew an RFID tag into a flexible cloth armband. It'd
    last for weeks!

Maybe they could borrow the technology in these....

Awesome journalism that. They get three people opinions, slanted in the
direction they are looking for. "It was legal but invonvenient and yesterday
morning it had not worked" ... what kind of a statement is that? Care to
elaborate. Ok, so it's better than the current system, and atleast it's
something in the direction of a motorcycle solution, but does this mean we
still get slugged with a fee if it doesn't work, or a $10 fine for not
having out tag mounted properly on the other toll systems?

Depends on how you hit the ground and whether it slips down so your
elbow breaks it into sharp shards I guess.

Volunteering to fall off a few times to see? :)

I have tried armbands for an MP3 player. Won't work with my jacket's
body armour unless I cinch it way tight, as it slips and generally makes
    life difficult.

I find myself how well they'd stand up to rain and sun... and being
thrown in the corner with the jacket and then having wet boots and bags
    chucked on top of it...

Not that I mind if they stop working, as long as I don't have to pay for
    the replacement!

Yup. but no one forces me to, or tells me if I don't then it will cost
me money to use their tollway.

Put it this way... suppose they used facial recognition, so if you chose
to use a fullface helmet you would have to pay extra. Would you use an
    openface?

read the fine print... not waterproof and you are responsible for any
    damage.

That's the current situation, reckon they'll suddenly find a way to make
a waterproof tag when they haven't in the last 2 years?

not that this will matter to sydneysiders...

  17. The fee if it doesnt work will hurt OK, in a car you're supposed to notice
if it doesnt beep. How would you know if the thing on your arm doesnt work?

  18. Yeah, you're probably right Gerry, but if we're going to have to wear this
thing to keep someones income happy, they should at least ensure its no less
safe than our current practice. If it's a box that you need to wear that
makes injury more likely in an off, it's not good enough.

All motorcycle political groups can be seen as a bunch of wankers to many.

  19. So what are we supposed to do now, stop just before the gates, put the
armband on, stop after the gate, take it back off and put it away somewhere
dry. What's the point of an armband tag that can't get wet?

    You tell me...

They may have solved the problem, as I understand it they couldn't make
it waterproof and able to take the heat of a Sydney summer at the same
    time.
