    Been mooching through more ads...

Had a look for 9Rs, for a laugh, put in a £3K max. There's bloody loads!

Bet they chomp through tyres and chains, though...

No more than any other bike of their size and fitting a Scottoiler will
make chain last ages. Tyre wear depends how you ride and as most 9Rs
are used for fast road work they tend to have stickier tyres fitted.
Stick a set of 020s on for your kind of riding and it'll be fine.

FJ was asking about comfy bikes and I said "9R" not that I've actually
    ridden one you understand

If your serious, make sure you distinguish the B model (94 to 96) from
the C and E modesl. The B was pretty rubbish.
Tyres, well, yes, they can. I got 20k miles out of the chain on mine
(as I did on my gixxer).

Not for me - I've sat on that one, it felt very "committed"

You can get commitment out of an armchair, just ask WC about it.

I'm weighing up options, ATM, but if you could expand on why the B model
was rubbish? Quality would bother me, but balls to the wall performance
would be pretty academic, given I'm no riding god.....
    20k on a chain isn't too bad...

Fast footstool. They feel tiny compared to a 9R.

There's very little in it. The gixer weighs less but feels wider, which
it is if trying to get it in through the back gates is anything to go
by. We've also got a 9R in this household and sitting them side by side
you wouldn't think there was any difference in size at all. The gixer
is taller in seat height, and the reach to the bars is a little bit
    greater. That's about it.

The B was developed in the age of the Exup and GSXR1100, unfortunately
the Fireblade had moved things on by the time it appeared. It's heavy
    and sedentary by comparison.

The C is almost a totally different bike in almost every aspect, a
much better bet. Lighter, faster, sharper.

Must definitely depend on rider shape then.

When I had me 9R I sat on a Gixxer in a shop and it felt tiny, like
what I imagine a mini moto would feel like, I got a very strong urge to
get off it, put it under my arm and walk off with it :)

Compare the size me of to the size of you two. Every bike I ride is
fucking huge, it's just that some are slightly less huge than others.

I've ridden a couple and I found them to be a little like a slightly
slower and very slightly sportier feeling ZZR1100. Just as big and
heavy, just as ponderous but not quite as quick.

If the Blade or Exup hadn't been around they wouldn't have been
regarded as shit, they'd have been cutting edge sportsbike. But time
and technology stand still for no-one and Kawasaki really got caught
out. They still didn't quite get it right with the C or E model, but
they are great bikes because they aren't quite so committed, not
    despite it.

    If you're considering buying a B model then make sure it's a B4,
because the earlier ones had handling 'issues' that were resolved on
the later bikes. Buy one because they are cheap, not because you think
they're a great sports tourer, but remember that when you come to sell
there'll be precious few people looking to buy one.

I'd say buy a C model myself because, as you rightly pointed out, a
reasonable one can be had for very cheap money.
