Well, I've never much liked "Neal", but it's not like you have a
choice in your name in the first place, is it? I'm *particularly*
grateful to my parents for not only giving me a pathetic hippy name
but also mis-spelling it so I have to go through life correcting the
gazillion occurences of it created by officialdom.

I reckon the native americans had the right idea - give the newborn
child a temporary name to shout at it with, and then, around the age
of 12 or so, give it an adult name that reflects the (now known)
    personality.

    16, apparently.

Which makes it even more of a coincidence that my ex-wife eventually
ended up with another bloke with the same name as me.

Well, yes, but I could have just put "Champ" in, couldn't I?

<looks> Hmmm, maybe not. Doing a surname search, there's 507
occurence of "Champ" (and 68 "Champs"), and (just for Charders) over
100 each of "Champkin" and "Champkins". There's also 97 "Deschamps"
(scary), and a number of glorious other (especially double-barreled)
    versions :
    - Guerney-Champion
    - Chamption (a version of gumption?)
    - Champion de Crespigny
    - Blewchamp (did she?)
    - Millinchamp
    - Mauchamp (bad champ)
    - Fafchamps
    - Fox-champkins
    - Champion-shotter

So, I guess I should be grateful for small mercies.

Abso bored us all completely to death with wittery prose along the
    lines of:
I wouldn't worry. Just means that you're not eligible to vote or you're
    under 18. :)

I reckon the native Americans had the right idea about many things,
    actually.

However, calling a kid "Whinging Little Git" for the first 12 years
and then going for "Moody ****" for the rest of its life may be a
little harsh - and hardly unique, even in a small village.

  13. I've not given it much thought but it sounds like she was on a mission.
I mean if it didn't put her off the first time...

I had one of those. She said it was because "Debbie" was a name in its own
    right.

I know, I was making the point that there's /shedloads/ of people worldwide
    with English forenames/Italian surnames.

I suppose I should have said "Tony Soprano".
