Are petrol stations subsidising diesel with unleaded ?

I didn't think there were any around those parts, but then again I've
    not looked that hard.
Which is almost the complete opposite to my plan! Well not the going
stupid bit obviously, but I think I'll be sticking (ha) with the old
Pilot Roads currently fitted. They've done an MV tour & a trackday but
still have loads of tread left. Must be made of concrete or summit.
    What can possibly go wrong?

Road 2s are sticky tyres for most people.

You'll be ok, it's not as if you want to get to the bar first.
I only use the 10R for holidays and acting the twat on twisty roads so
to try and cut costs by buying tyres that should do the job but might
let go on really hot roads is not my idea of fun.

Once you're on some of those alpine passes you're giving it hell along
the straight bits, banging on the brakes, going into a hairpin and
then getting hard on the gas to overtake a car or lorry as soon as you
get out of the corner and the surfaces can be very smooth and slippery
so highsides are a real possibility. I'll stick (ha!) to using
Qualifier RRs or similar and knowing that if it's sunny and the road
temperature is up around the 40c mark my tyres will be ok.

I don't really care what others choose when it comes to tyres because
if I lob my bike and I've put on the best I can get then it's tough
shit but if I buy something that'll give me an extra 500 miles and the
bike spits me off then I'm a fool.

Coming back to the UK from the Slovenia run, it was strange to be noticing
how cheap the fuel was here.

Tell me about it. I had to fill up on the way to Chimay and it cost me
26-45 Euros for less than 19 litres at a Carrefour service station on
    the autoroute.

OTOH I fuelled the Muttleypla in France: .98 euros v. 102.9p per litre (or
    thereabouts) in the UK.

Eh? But that's all in France, until you actually come into Basel. And
there are no motorway services South of Colmar until you get to
Pratteln, about 10km SE of Basel.

Had a bang on the head, perhaps? The only thing I can think of is that
you had to buy a vignette at the border post, which is perfectly
normal practice, and that somehow in your addled memory you've
transposed that into getting fined at a motorway service area.

Maybe it was that one. I thought it was before Basel, but we were
heading to Unterendringen(sp?), so SE of Basel makes sense.
No, definitely a services. We were all lined up at the pumps when plod
came wandering over to check the bikes. They made us push the bikes out
the way of the pumps, then sent us off to the cashpoint to get the fine
money & shop to buy vignettes.

  9. Monday I paid 92 (I'm certain it was that) cents a litre for diesel at a
French supermarket filling station. And it accepted my English credit
    card.

I find that hard to believe (the price, not the card)

  14. The station at Auchan near Boulogne on the St Omer road.

I'll tell you when I can find the bill. It has always been the cheapest
along that part of Opal Coast.

At the time I did a mental calculation that it was in the low 80 in
    pence.

  16. If it makes you feel better I remember seeing 94 something cents a litre
for diesel in Intermarche and 1.13 on the motorway.

    I'm told by a friend :
    (ANECDOTAL ALERT for non believers)
That the fuel prices vary on almost a daily basis in France as the fuel
outlet vie for the best price/sales/loss leaders, going as far as
listing the fuel in half cents to get an edge on the competition.
