As Loz will shortly be along to tell you at great length, the spec to
refer to is the one that this bloke refers to flettingly - the JASO
standard. JASO MA compliance is what you need these days.

    Pip says...
Buy JASO MA spec oil for use in bikes with wet clutches.

You may now return to tonight's featured programme.
    That is all.

May not be as small as you think. Consider how much more willingly an engine
revs once the oil is warmed through and less viscous.

    You're not wrong there.

I had a change on mind after hearing about a Honda technical service
bulletin[1]. This guys opinion on oils for bikes in fact....

    http://www.math.uwaterloo.ca/~rblander/oil_opinion.html

It's the first time I've seen a technical bulletin from a motorcycle
    manufactuer quoted.

  6. Depends on the engine.

I know that modern truck diesels have obtained a useful power increase
through using modern synthetic thinner lubes.

And think - even if it's only a horsepower or two, it's a damn good
result simply for undoing a drain plug and replacing it.

    <raises hand hesitantly>

I think that that's unrelated to his point.

In a multigrade oil designation, the cold weather bit comes /before/
the 'W'. In his example, both the the winter and summer viscosities
are higher in the "thicker" oil: winter 10W vs 20W; summer 40 vs 50.

Oil friction is viscous friction, not "metal on metal" friction.
Provided the oil film's thick enough to float the metal bits away from
each other, a thiner oil *should" produce less drag.

I assume he means that a thinner oil may allow more metal-to metal
contact, but overall the lower oil viscosity will reduce friction.

Thicker oils may take longer to circulate at startup and that's where
supposedly most of the wear takes place.

So, in conclusion, I have no idea what the overall effect would be.

Having perused his website I am of the opinion that the chap is a **** of

    <snip>

If the engine manufacturer has the SAE40 oil as one of the
recommended viscosities for the "warm weather", we can be
reasonably sure that no more metal to metal contact will
    occur than with SAE50 oil.
Why do all these self proclaimed oil experts think they know
better than the people developing oils and engines?

    Well I never did.
Indeed. I'm still suprised that it's that much. I would have thought that
the Max Power crew would have jumped on the thin oil bandwagon with a
    vengance

Well, with any of my injected engines, I've never noticed any difference at
all. With the carbed engines I think the freer revving could be far more
easily ascribed to better fuelling in a warm engine.

Also, I *thought* one of the points of modern oils was that their viscosity
changed rather a lot less as they heat up than in days of yore.

Thanks to all who replied. I heard lots more myth throwing [1], but
some nicely put, valid points and Mucks link was excellent, thanks.
If the end result had been that I could have safely used oil that only
cost half as much it would have been worth it. But now I need to find
an affordable supply of oil to the latest *motorcycle* spec. And Loz,
the contact you gave me a few weeks back has given some great leads,
    thanks.

[1] Lots of "I've always felt that..." and "It seems to me..." type
comments, as opposed to those who KNOW because they're somewhere in
    the trade or industry.
