Anyone wanting to go on the French Run this year...

.....or in the future:

Look, sorry, but you can't just page anyone who might have space in
their room and tag along. Especially without asking me first.

Reasons:

1. The hotel will be less than amused if, all of a sudden, they have
unexpected people turning up.
2. It will sod up the catering (see above).
3. It's bad manners.

The French Run costs about £7500 to lay on. That's why people are
asked for payment well in advance, because it's impossible otherwise
to bank on 50 people turning up purely because they say: "Sure, of
course I'm coming". I'm thinking of the EOSM meeting a year or so ago,
when the Black Horse had a lot of no-shows.

In addition to that, hotels and ferry companies need deposits
totalling a few grand, again in advance.

If people think they can just book at the last minute, or tag along,
it will be quite impossible to organise any future runs. If there's a
cancellation (and there are always drop-outs, which is why there's a
waiting list, which is why Zymurgy and Hog are coming along), then
fine, but that's a different matter.

And besides, just reckoning you can rock up at the last minute without
notice will (justifiably) piss off people who have shelled out their
own hard earned, some months ago.

Here's an idea: you try herding UKRM cats and do away with any rules at all.

 

I don't think I'm an anyone-basher, really. I'll have the occasional
spat with people over a specific subject, but I'm not the sort to snipe
at them forever after.

If they're a complete mong, like kennyboi or sir.twatty, I'll have my
fun for a day or two then bung 'em in the bin.

Ah, the joys of DFV-ism.

 

I understand completely, which is why there isn't any regimentation on
the French Runs. I book the ferries and hotels, and that's it.
Everyone does their own thing. But t's impossible to organise smething
this big without proper pre-booking, at least from the hotel's POV.

I didn't, see above. I'm considering going to France, I'm aware the
hotel is full, I've investigated alternative hotels, I was simply
asking BGN about ferries. So before you have a little strop it would
help if you knew what you were talking about.
