    Stuff:

    VB6 (esp. COM/DCOM) min 2 years, ASP, SQL, XML/XSLT,
Documentum, Miramo, Framemaker. List goes from "must
have" to "would be nice". Microsoft development house,
    so no Linux fags here.

    Pros:

Salary to 50K + 20% yearly bonus at this level.
27 days holiday per year. Paid overtime. 35 Hrs pw,
9 to 5. Not bothered if you work before or after.
15% non-contributary pension. You will work for a
very large financial company, so plenty of money.
Excellent benefits inc season ticket loan (0%),
free gym membership, etc. Free underground (secure)
car park for your bike. Friendly small team of
    programmers/geeks who run the internet/intranet
    sites for the company.

    Cons:

You work for me. You must wear a suit. It's in the
City but round the corner from Liverpool St. Net
access is limited to websites only - there's always
Google groups. You may have to work in Swinedon
at some point, but travel expenses are paid.

Still interested? Drop me an email...

1 year on BASIC. Fucking ace work on a 48k Spectrum doing a Frankie
Goes To Hollywood video. Pretty good with MS Word and Excel as long as
the spell checker's on. Oh yeah, a bit of Cobal on a Research Machines
380Z, or was that a Datsun?

Do I qualify? Actually, just read the Swindon bit. Nah, forget it. No,
seriously. NO, I MEAN IT!!! You can't have me... no matter how much
you offer. No, I don't take that off blokes...

I know just how you feel. I thought I was doing fairly but when I read
the 50k thing and *then* reading Cane saying "do people live on that?"
or something that *really* pushed the nail in :-(

that's pretty high for a VB code monkey - presumably you're looking
    for someone fairly senior.
that's the same as here - it must be a "very large financial company"
thing, because just about everywhere else I've ever worked was at
least 37.5 Hrs pw, if not 40.
    ^^^^^^ ^^ ^^^^^
that's the other thing I was surprised at when I started working here
    - I kind of assumed "very large financial companies" would be tight,
but they throw money at projects as if it - quite literally, mate -
    grew on trees.

    I wouldn't bet on it.

Anyway, he'd by no means be the only person around here who "lives on"
more than 50k, if you count joint incomes.

  11. Good point, well made. And no, I wouldn't bet on it either.

Still, money doesn't equal class, does it?

there's not much point in anyone living in Essex striving for "class".

"Rich and Obnoxious" is the best they can hope for in life.

why? The joint income in our household is considerably more than 50k,
    BTW.

he's not *that* rich - if he were, he'd not be driving around in a
    wannabewagon like an E240...

I also worked for a software house that was nominally 9-5. Really
    0800-2300 though!

Solicitors was also 9-5. Maybe it's a "profession" thing. Anyone
    here done IT for medics?

Nope. It's an "in at the deep end" kind of thing, to replace
a contractor who's heading back home to Aus and we need a
drop-in permie. If things were different then I would be
tempted for other language skills and get you to cross-train,
as a good grounding in programming means you only have to
learn syntax, but in this case we haven't got the time.
Sounds like you're in the wrong industry!
It depends on your experience. I had 6 years VB when I went
there and was on a smidge under 50K. I've since been promoted
to manager of the team, so I'm the next grade up now :)

And no, it's not a PM job at all. We have those to do the shitty
stuff for us and run the project properly.
    Heh, no worries!
