Anyone painted a frame

Discussion in 'Classic Motorbikes' started by antony.adshead, Jul 26, 2005.

  1. I'm rebuilding my BSA B44 VS and am considering painting the frame
myself. I've seen International's yacht enamel recommended. Anyone got
any experience of enamelling their frame? There's some spray paint on
the frame just now. Can enamel go on top of this OK after sanding,
    degreasing etc?

    As above :)

Smooth-rite is a superb brush painting paint.Hard, durable and not a
bad finish.Remove all rust and flakey paint and key, matt the surface
you are painting.Paint cannot adhere to any gloss, greasey or rusty
surface so degrease the surface with some Meths or the like.

    Tip:Get a good quality fine horsehair 1"/ 1.5" brush.Don't skimp on
this as it can make all the difference.

  3. It sprays alright as well. I've been using it on top of Bondaprimer which
is the best anti-rust primer I've come across. Not too easy to get though
unless you're lucky enough to have a local stockist. Ours just closed :-(

    I use,
    http://www.bodyshopwarehouse.co.uk/meta/51.htm
Industry standard(Car/Aircraft) ferrous and none ferrous anti-corrion
control, then normal primer(2k 1k) over it and then top-coat.However as
this primer is,"Hydroscopic" next paint layer primer or top should be
applied as soon as possible as the etch primer will absorb
moisture."This" primer is readily available from most Automotive
stockists but not the,"Hiigh-street" ones the,"Trade" ones out of the
Yellow pages. Many also do their own brand at a 3rd of the price which
    is exactly the same :)

    PS
I have thinned and sprayed the,"Crinkle" finish,"Hammertie" some years
ago and it still looked well so with your post I may well thin and
spray some smoothrite. It is damn good paint :)

  5. We're just about as far from water as you can get here on this island.
    Typhoons are another matter though...

  6. I remember reading that nowhere in the UK is further than 75 miles
from the sea. Is that true?

  9. 72 miles from where we are, practically equidistant from all the places
which are reckoned to be the centre of England, would just about get you to
a very muddy bit of the Severn Estuary I reckon. Still, it's tidal so I
    suppose it's classed as sea.

  10. That figures. But then Buckby is miles from anywhere anyway....

If you mean Long Buckby, no. It's miles from anywhere interesting. By
the way when the canal network was at it's height there was
practically nowhere in England farther than 15 miles from navigable
    water, especially the Midlands.

  12. On reflection, I did (Long) Buckby a disservice: isn't it mentioned in
Flanders & Swan's "Slow Train"? And it's only a few miles from the start
of the A361 which wanders in gloriously Chestertonian fashion to Ilfracombe,
via Banbury, Chipping Norton, Avebury and Devizes. It gets a bit lost after
Taunton these days, to emerge at Tiverton as the North Devon Link, where any
resemblance to his poem about the rolling English road unfortunately ceases,
though many people have found that part of it a quick way to Kensal Green
    and similar establishments.
